My wife wants roses and after doing some homework we (notice I said "we") need to buy Fortuniana (rootstock) Roses. Where does one buy this. Home Depot and Lowes sell junk roses so I need to go to a specialty nursery. Any ideas?

I would call local plant nurseries to see if they have them. I am not sure what area you live in? You can do an Internet search.

Orban’s Nursery – here is there web link: http://www.orbans.com/roses.php
They have a Fortuniana Roses order form online. You could call to see if they have any in stock.

Jackson and Perkins - http://www.jacksonandperkins.com/gardening/GP/gatepage/FortunianaRootstockRoses - You can order them online.

Actually the best roses for the area are "Knockout" roses, and I have seen those at the big box stores as well as almost every local nursery. Not sure where you live but Wayne Hibbs Farm and Garden on Beneva is a good local nursery that sell all kinds of plants suitable for the area.

Good luck!

Another mail order source for grafted on fortuniana -- look at Cool Roses Cool Roses --I haven't ordered from them but I saw their nursery recommended on a rose society website.

Some 'antique' roses also grow well in Florida. I planted the rose 'Mrs. B. R. Cant' (no joke--that's the rose's name) in February from a one gallon pot and the plant is already 3 feet tall and lovely.

Wow, that's great. My Knockouts don't even look that good. Is there any danger in the mail order roses? Disease or damage in shipping, etc.?

There is danger of damage, as with anything that is shipped. I got this rose and and two others, one of which was damaged in shipping, from Chamblee Rose Nursery in Texas Chamblee Rose Nursery (they sell own root roses-- some of the antique roses seem to be able to grow OK without being grafted, especially if you plant them with lots of organic matter). I emailed photos of the damage and they promptly sent another plant without charge.

This rose gets some afternoon shade and it is doing better than the others that are planted in all day sun. Can you tell I like roses ?
