There is a bird sanctuary in Ponce De Leon Park, in Punta Gorda where there are a lot of different birds that have been injured - you can't tell by looking at them, but there are a lot, and a lot of other that aren't injured that come every day and hang out with the others, and are fed daily. You ought to check it out. Its on the water, and has a really nice picnic area / pavillion, and fishing peir, and a small beach as well.

We went by the Ponce De Leon Park because we were looking for the burrowing owls about 10 days ago. They were not around just yet. I just heard today that Cape Coral has burrowing owls all over the place- in town and in peoples yards. I don't know if they are migratory and if they have arrived as yet. I also don't know if you have to wait for dusk or dawn to see them. Any info out there?
We did see the bird sanctuary but did not take a close look at the time.

There's an undeveloped pasture at the NE corner of Lakewood Ranch Blvd and SR70 that often has tall grass with a tree line at the infinity point. It probably belongs to Schroeder-Manatee Ranch so you'd need permission to go in but it would be a good spot.
