I don't get it either.

Isn't the police department here to serve? How does the decision not to have this celebration . . . serve?

You're being Logical! Don't let the powers that be in Sarasota hear that - they'll think you're crazy! :-)

It's really up to those of us who live here year round to express our distaste by voting the incumbents out. I've never understood the noise restrictions(live music) in the downtown area, and we are really not trying to improve the downtown conditions at all.
As a point of reference, I went to the Chalk Festival this year and the crowds were enormous. Yet, I made the mistake of trying to have lunch downtown. Main street looked abandoned. Many businesses weren't even open as well as a lot of the restaurants. Main street on the weekends is a ghost town.

Main St may be a ghost town on week ends but think of all the fun you can have with no waiting lines to drive around the 'roundabout' as many times as you want.

Weekdays it's a ghost town too. Except at lunch time when the workers from nearby offices head to lunch.

I miss the days of live music at the Main Street Depot and Lemon Coast. Great free music for all. It was the "for all" that the city didn't like. It was free and attracted all walks of life.
Anyone else remember the bands Fat Cat, John Prestia, Chris Anderson, Bonus for remembering Rodney the acoustic warm up guy.

In Punta Gorda many of the restaurants play live music from Thursday through Saturday night. Jacks has an open bar to the sidewalk, and they almost always have live music on the corner. There is also a nice Wine bar on Taylor that has live music outside then as well.

The beauty of "The Depot" was that it was free. Beer, wine, and burgers were available but no purchase was necessary. Often times the bands were better than at the Gator Club across the street.

I'm no stalker, but if you find places like that, I might start following you! LOL

Look at it this way, all that's really being cancelled is the Pinapple Drop. All the bars will be open on Main Street minus the carnival atmosphere down the middle of the street.

The Christmas Parade, which I walked in for WSLR was last Saturday night was a blast; the Boat Parade is this Saturday in Sarasota Bay.

The city of Sarasota is it's own worst enemy....
