I'm wondering what the medical field is like down in Florida.. most notably the job opportunities for an RN/visiting nursing, etc.?

I currently live in NJ and it's very hard to find a job in the nursing field because hospitals are cutting back on their expenses plus everybody just wants to hire per diem contract nurses now... seems like it's very hard to find full time 'employement' up here in the northeast now... wondering how it compares down to florida?

any particular areas of florida better for the healtcare/nursing field than others?

how does the pay scales compare?

thank you very much for your help!

The medical field is one of the biggest employers in Charlotte County besides the county itself and the school system.

No, Sarasota County is north of Charlotte County. They are two separate counties.

some folks have recommended I check out Port Charlotte for vacation rentals, etc. I'm looking to rent a place for a year to get to know the area better before I buy a single family home.

If I remember correctly when driving on I-75 it seemed very vacant around the Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte area.. but maybe that was just because of where the highway goes through?

I liked Sarasota and Fort Myers... we are a young couple in our 30's.. not sure where would be best to rent either a condo or single family house for a year to get to know the area and get our feet wet! We want to be by the beaches too..

Yes, the towns are a few miles West of 75. There are more rural areas in both communities, but the towns themselves are anything but vacant.
If you want to be very close to the beaches, you will pay A LOT more, and have a lot more traffic to deal with, just an FYI

how does Bradenton compare to Sarasota? I didn't get a chance to drive through Bradenton when I was down there last year.. I ran out of time.

Nursing is one of the few professions where you can logically expect to land a job down here.

The pay will be 10-20% less, but so is the cost of living and the taxes.

And you have the Gulf of Freaking Mexico nearby, not the Jersey Shore (where I grew up, by the way).

No-brainer.

I'd definitely look at Sarasota county-there's Sarasota Memorial which is huge and has an excellent reputation, Doctor's Hospital, Lakewood Ranch and Blake in Bradenton (a major trauma center). I know there are other hospitals in the area in Venice and an satellite of Sarasota Memorial in Northport. Because there are many affluent aging people down here, there are tons of specialists and assisted living centers around. I know two nurses here who work for the health dept.Being in Charlotte county will limit you in job selection or cause you to have a nasty commute if you land a job in Sarasota county. I think you will be shocked tho at how low the pay is here. Good luck

My family is looking into moving into the Sarasota area. We stayed in Rotonda last year and are looking to spend a couple weeks in the gulf gate area in April. I am a nurse and have looked into various hospitals in the region. Sarasota Memorial lists jobs on their website: smh.com Starting pay for an RN is $21.25 with shift diffs at $3/hr for midnights and i think $2/hr for weekends. This is the info I have obtained from the web and blogs. Sarasota Memorial lists pay on the website when you click on a vacancy. Per diem nurses make $42 an hour. SMH is a magnet hospital and thus have incentive programs, tuition reimbursement and have to keep up with the magnet standard so nurse/pt ratio is controlled among other things. From visiting the area we enjoyed being closer to Sarasota and by the beach. myfloridahomesmls is a great website for researching homes in the area and can give you a ballpark on what houses are going for. Good luck with your research.
