Does anyone have any experience with this issue? In other words, are we going to be hassled by the authorities, or is homeschooling generally supported? Our current home in Cal is pretty liberal on this issue. Thanks!

I had no problems homeschooling, you register, keep good records of all work to show every now & then when it's time. It was a while back for me, but I had no cause for complaint.

I've been homeschooling my kids for several years. We are members of the Suncoast Homeschoolers and love that group: suncoasthomeschoolers.com It's non-denominational.

You have to keep work samples to show upon request and register with the county. Another option is to be registered with the Florida Unschoolers, a private umbrella school. In which case you do not report to the county you only report attendance to the FL Unschoolers. This is what we do.

My little one does K12.com and my middle school girl does Florida Virtual School, which has been a terrific experience.

I'd be happy to answer any additional questions.

SoFlGal,

I am having a hard time locating/contacting any homeschool groups in Sarasota/Venice/Englewood area. The websites are usually not working and emails I've sent are unanswered. Help! We are new to the area. The only woman I spoke with was very nice, but she is in Fort Myers and I'm not looking to travel that far. I was hoping for more local groups, elem school age.

Hi there!

I think Suncoast Homeschoolers kind of disbanded. The group leaders' kids are now older and I think she stepped back from the role and things kind of dissolved.

SW Homeschoolers is in Ft Myers: https://www.homeschool-life.com/fl/swflhsf/ as well as GulfCoast: https://www.homeschool-life.com/285/

I would call Florida Virtual School and see if there are any groups around. My daughter, Willow, did FLVS for four years and they had somewhat of a community. In addition, your child can still participate in local sports programs and be homeschooled.

Florida loves homeschoolers - it means they don't have to provide services for your child - so they save money.

Thanks, SoFLGal.

I've been in touch with Gulf Coast, had a nice conversation with a mom over there. She said there were "a ton" of groups in the Venice/Sarasota area, but she couldn't really name any. I thought maybe it was a hidden in plain sight kind of thing, but maybe there just aren't any active groups.

There is no contact info for SW Homeschoolers on the website. Any info I've found re homeschool groups -- and I have looked, I'm not asking people to do the research for me -- is either outdated (emails come back undeliverable, weblinks are defunct) or I get no response. We just moved here and are from an area where there are a LOT of activities and resources to choose from, so this is disheartening.

Maybe I'll have to try to start a group up here. Not sure what to do.

The what the person in charge of Suncoast did. If you want her contact info, I can give it to you. She might know of some that I dont or give you some tips on how to start your own group.

My eight grader wanted to try the FLVS school this year so we are brand new to homeschooling and I have also tried to find some homeschool groups so she can have some interaction with other homeschoolers and I have not been able to find one either I have heard of a group called SHARE but have no contact person. I would love to connect with any other moms to see if we can locate a group or start one ourselves looks like two other moms had similar concerns. Would like to exchange phone numbers not sure how to do that
