Hi, I've vacationed down on Siesta Key many many times and love going over to Myakka but I'd never heard of the deep hole until now.

I have eyeballed it on google maps and there is a road that seems to get you close and then a trail I could walk down to get a better look but was wondering if anyone else has done this? Is the road that leads there gated shut? etc etc etc.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If you are zoomed all the way in you can actually see the 100+ alligators mostly laying out on the north east bank.

I haven't been down there myself, but it's part of Lower Myakka Lake. Lower Myakka Lake is in the Preserve area, so you need a permit from the rangers station to even go in.

I'm pretty sure that you have to hike or canoe in, but I'd call the rangers at the park for more info, including routes.

Thanks! I will give the rangers office a call.

If I go, I will probably just go with my 14yo. I really don't like going into areas like that with too many or younger kids in tow as it makes me too nervous to enjoy myself.

Yep. And if you scroll east of there you will see a lot more of these sandy brown splotches which look to me to be other more junior sinkholes that are currently just depressions that fill with water and drain.

I like wildlife and it looks like it would be cool to see.

Thanks +`1 rep for you.

Called them and.....no advance sign-up. First come, first serve, max of 30 people.

Hiking in is 2.5miles each way....which I can do but not going to get anybody else that will want to join me at this stage so I will just wait and go sometime when my kids are older.

You can also go in by boat.

this is actually pretty cool. i've been to myakka but didn't know about this. i wouldn't want to do it in the middle of the summer when it's so hot but seems like an awesome winter thing to check out! (and slightly terrifying!)

When you say go in by boat, what do you mean? We travel to Florida every year for a couple of months (September/November) We went to Myakka Park last year and all we saw were about two birds. No alligators at all! We're not up to hiking 2.5 miles each way so how else would we get to see the alligators? Be interested in any information anyone can give us. Many thanks.
