My husband and I are moving to the area and I will be working in Riverview near Brandon and my husband is in the final stages of possibly getting a job in Tampa near the Seminole Hard Rock Casino. We have always vacationed on Anna Maria Island, Bradenton and Parrish and would like to live in this area we think. I find this area looks more tropical than the Tampa areas like Brandon, Valrico and further north.

Does anyone make the commute to Tampa everyday for work? Would the traffic be horrible?

We have two kids in school so I am thinking this might be too far to be away from them. Any other parents in the same situation?

Yes, I have made the commute from Sarasota to Riverview for the past three years. It's not a bad drive but it does get old after a while. The traffic moves right along and if you step on it your home a little faster. It does beat sitting in traffic. My drive is about 45 miles one way and if it was any more than that I would scratch my head. Hard Rock is easy to get to but try and make it 35-40 miles. Parrish wouldn't be too bad as long as you can get on the highway fairly quickly. You are right about the area looking more tropical. I can grow plants down here successfully that I don't see in Riverview and Brandon. Depending on what growing zone map you look at the cut off line is around Sun City Center/ exit 240 (last Hillsborough County exit or about ten miles south of Riverview). We bought in Sarasota vs Riverview because we believe the value of our home would increase much faster than up in the Tampa area. Were still waiting but still hopeful. Hope this helps in your home search. Good luck.

I used to drive that way during rush hour. The traffic moves very nicely. No traffic backups and you stay the speed limit unless an accident causes a back up which is not typical.

If you go as far as Anna Maria Island to live, the is going to be a long haul just to get to I-75 and it will add considerable time to the commute due to traffic lights and distance to/from I-75. The closer you live to I-75, the faster you will get to and from work.

The drive from Bradenton or Parrish will be a breeze. We live by the airport and my hubby drives 51 miles to downtown Tampa each day on I-75. Takes him about an hour door-to-door and it's all highway. In four years he's probably only gotten bogged down once or twice due to an accident or something on the interstate. People he works with who live much closer have almost as long a drive doing the stop-and-go traffic thing.

It is definitely worth it to live here and commute.

What area has better schools? My kids will be going into 4th and 6th grade and I notice a lot of FL schools get a bad rap. I was toying with the Valrico area since it was rated well, but would like to live closer to the beaches.

How is 301? Is it better to take I-75 than 301 in the morning?

I-75 is much quicker because high speed and no traffic lights; 301 is lower speed and traffic lights and lots of local traffic.

My husband and I had all intentions of moving to Valrico but couldn't find anything we liked after our home in NJ sold. We started looking in the Sarasota/Bradenton area because of the proximity to the beaches. After realizing the houses in Sarasota were priced too high for what we wanted we wound up in Parrish with a brand new house. We can get to Anna Maria Island in less than half hour, Tampa in about 45 minutes, Brandon in 30 minutes and Sarasota in 20 minutes. The longest part of any commute is getting to 75 so listen to the advice of the other commenters. On the other hand, we are empty nesters and you have a family so Valrico may be the right place for you.
