Here is some information on both areas. It really depends on the lifestyle you are looking for and the type of home. Both areas offer similar types of activities and types of available homes.

City of Venice - http://venicegov.com/
Venice offers a variety of living options such as condos, older smaller homes, and new developments. The average age is in the 60’s. The historic downtown offers unique shops, salons, and restaurants. Venice has public beaches and a dog friendly beach as well as fishing, golfing and nature trails. Venice tends to be very congested in the winter when all of the snow birds are here. The downtown Main Street offers a variety of events throughout the year. Venice has its own airport. Venice is located in Sarasota County.

City of Punta Gorda - http://www.ci.punta-gorda.fl.us/
Punta Gorda offers a variety of living styles. Punta Gorda Isles has homes on canals that lead to the Gulf. Punta Gorda has a lot of activities downtown and at the parks. It has a charming and historic waterfront with restaurants and shops. Boating and fishing are also major attractions. The harbor leads out into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The crime rate is low. You can use your bike to get around town and within the parks. Punta Gorda has its own airport. Punta Gorda does not have any beaches but it has the harbor. Punta Gorda is located in Charlotte County.

The biggest issue off the top of my head is distance to a gulf beach. Venice is on the gulf. Punta Gorda is on a harbor and it is some distance by land or water to actually get to the Gulf of Mexico.
