I'm in the middle of re-landscaping my yard. I'm going for drought tolerant...that is totally the way forward. I could probably count on my hands how many times it's rained this year. Out here on Siesta Key it's been so dry and last summer the rains were really not that heavy either.

Yes, drought tolerant, xeriscape and native plantings are the way to go, here. It is unnatural to try and plant a lush green lawn that has to be maintained with a lot of water and chemical fertilizers (which I believe are restricted part of the year now, anyway)

I, too, just hand-water my plants. Where I live there is no soil, I am near the bay so it's just a sandy lawn with weeds. I am working on constantly reducing the "lawn" and planting more plants and using mulch, etc. A bonus is the increased wildlife (birds, bees, butterflies, etc.) you will get doing this.
