My only experience with the area is longboat key vacations 25 yrs ago with our kids (which we loved by the way). Retired couple from the Midwest thinking of spending a couple of months in Sarasota this winter. Would like to be walking distance from stores, restaurants bars and close to the beach or on the beach but that is probably cost prohibitive. Planning to spend a couple weeks in September in Sarasota to explore areas and settle on where to ultimately rent this winter. First question, will we have trouble renting this winter if we don't reserve until September? Next question, where should we stay for the 2 week exploration trip? Think it would be great to stay beachfront if that is possible. We will have our dog and need a first floor or few stairs. Any advice on the areas/neighborhoods we should look at for our extended stay? One, I am sure unusual, consideration is ease of making the trip to the Ellenton sports complex. I play hockey several times per week (ice & inline) and would like to play when I am there those couple of months. In fact, one of the reasons I am interested in Sarasota is because there is the opportunity to play hockey. I have also considered the Ft. myers/Naples area because there is a rink in Estero. I know, it is a bit odd. Also, if there is any other ice or inline venues, please advise.
My budget is somewhat flexible but thinking $4-5k/mo for rent. Is that realistic for a great location?

I would rent downtown and the reason being, it is dog friendly, tons of shopping, dining, attractions, and very close to Lido, Longboat, and Siesta Key. Also, if you boat you are walking distance to Marina Jack.

You are going to meet more locals staying downtown than if you are on one of the beaches.

I agree with this ^^. Also, renting anywhere on the beach will be cost prohibitive and maybe impossible. This past year everything was a sellout (or so I've heard) You have to be reserved a year in advance at least. My in-laws used to pay $3,000 per WEEK (in season) to stay on the beach on Anna Maria. Ridiculous.

If you can find anything downtown, you will love it, it's close to the bay, dog-friendly, you will have a trolley to take you to Lido/Longboat if you want, and it's the center of everything here. Downtown has everything you want or need for daily living and it's beautiful.

Good luck to you, and I would start searching early, this place is really getting popular.

Ok, thanks. What is the best way to search for great place downtown? Are there specific streets or neighborhoods to look for? Is VRBO or Craigslist the way to search? How about rental agents or real estate firms?
