Is the Sarasota area one of those areas that the cost of living, and the cost of housing in particular, much higher than the incomes that people make?

Many people refer to much of Florida being exactly that. Is Sarasota a bit better or a bit worse in that regard?

How would you compare it to other cities in that regard..if you were to rank it with Orlando, Tampa, or any other cities you are familiar with - even from out-of-state.

Sarasota isn't much if any higher than most areas of Florida. Housing comes in all price ranges here, although rental market is very tight so that might cost more. If purchasing, you could pay more for HOI if buying an older home near the coast. Basically any higher cost of living would be with housing; but as I said, it comes in all price ranges here. Other than homeowner's, I find it to be a bargain paradise for us. We used to live in Lakeland, and some costs there were actually higher than here. Homeowner's in Lakeland was cheaper, though.

I would say that in these times it's worth it to spend a little more for the place you want to live. I have lived in Florida all my life, and there was a time when Sarasota WAS prohibitively more expensive than Tampa and other cities. It is a popular city. I do think that will happen again, but obviously while I am a "gypsy" lol, I don't really have a crystal ball. We just love living here.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, that's how I classify Sarasota. As an expensive city that you'd pay more to live in than you would with Tampa or Orlando, and not sure, but maybe even more than Miami as well.

Apparently housing costs have gone down, from the sounds of it than...

I don't live there so I'm just asking, and I promise I'm not trolling.

Isn't a good deal of the housing in Sarasota fixed-income elderly owned trailers in some of the cleanest trailer parks I've ever seen? Miles and miles of them?

IMO, it costs approx 20% more to rent in comparable parts of South FL(Ft Laud, Miami, West Palm etc). Could be much more than that to buy something comparable. However, wages can be somewhat higher in S FL also.

Ever since the hurricanes hit in the mid 2000s, mobile homes must have a high wind rating to be allowed in the area which makes them much more expensive. You don't find them around here so much.
