I'm down there for vacation in early June.

I have been down 8ish times and am staying on siesta key right off the main downtown area.

Anyway, I am looking for any local suggestions of good, reasonable places to eat in the area as well as any cool places to visit.

I love Shells on the main Tamiami trail just south of the south bridge onto siesta key but they changed ownership. Went there last year and it was similar...just not sure they are still open.

Loved the jetty on the south end of Casey Key just norht of venice beach, that was sweet.

Been to mote, loved it...ditto Myakka (many times)

So looking for some current suggestions, much appreciated.

OUr group will be adults plus kids aged 12-16.

Der Dutchman Amish restaurant in Sarasota. they seat 500 and also have an in house bakery and gift shot. It is 15 minutes from Siesta Key. Yoder's Amish Restaurant is a block away. They are both very well known. It's in a small Amish community. Nearby is a nice vegetable stand and tiny/cute one room post office known as the Pinecraft Post Office. Pinecraft is the part of town though it is still in Sarasota. Amish folks walking around there. they don't ride horse and buggy because it is in the city; they ride adult sized tricycles (or walk or take the bus) instead. There are many more of them in winter versus summer.

Der Dutchman Restaurant - Sarasota, Florida

South Florida Museum, Parker Manatee Aquarium and Bishop Planetarium - Three great attractions in one stop. The South Florida Museum shows the region from the prehistoric to the present with life-size dioramas and exhibits based on its extensive collections of anthropological artifacts. The Manatee Aquarium is a second stage rehabilitation facility for manatees that will be released back into the wild. There are a number of really great restaurants on that list that would not exactly fall into the category of reasonably priced places to eat. I guess it would depend on your definition of reasonable.

If you're looking for something different, the Drunken Poet Cafe on Main street has great Japaanes & Thai food.

Anna Maria Oyster Bar, just north of the airport on US41 is a good local seafood place that won't break your budget. www.oysterbar.net

The White Horse Pub on N. Lockwood Ridge Rd is a great little pub/tavern with interesting menu items like the Scotch Egg (some sort of sausage wrapped around a hard boiled egg and flash fried, it's delicious). They also have a great beer cheese soup.

For breakfast or brunch, The Broken Egg is very popular and affordable.

Another brunch option is the French bakery C'est La Vie on Main street in downtown Sarasota.

The Old Salty Dog has great pub food and seafood.

The Daiquiri Deck in Siesta Key village is always a great spot.

For BBQ, there's a small restaurant on south Tamiami Trail (US 41) a few blocks north of Stickney Point called the Oaks Open Pit BBQ. Plain restaurant with good eats.

For something more funky, try the Hob Nob Drive In on US301 (Washington Blvd). The Hob Nob has been at that corner practically forever. It is outdoor dining, no AC, so dress comfortably.

If you're willing to venture a little further north, Bradenton Beach and Anna Maria have some great local restaurants.
