Thanks, this is very helpful, as have been all of the comments. We're live and let live type people. We just want a friendly environment. Culturally diverse and tolerant is a huge plus!

We have a couple of gay guys on the next street over. Couldn't talk to nicer people. Myself, I don't see the problem.

Just want to wish you best of luck. You sound like a wonderful couple that I would be only too happy to have as neighbors.

I think it goes without saying that on a social bulletin board, you will find a higher level of open-mindedness than in the general public. I assume the poster is asking for an objective view.

I would think you would find Sarasota better than anywhere else in Florida (with the exception of Miami, maybe, but who the hell wants to live in Miami?!), but I would also hazard a guess that if you stray too far, you will be met with the same or worse intolerance as you would find in almost any suburban area in the country.

But for what it is worth, Sarasota is definitely highly-regarded in terms of being gay-friendly.

in all honesty. i dont know the feelings and attitude in sarasota since i dont live there, but you might not want to stray to far out of the city limits. the opinions of the average or majority do not post how they feel. you have a handful of people that get on the thread and put gays on a pedestal. my question is still, do you want to fit in or stand out. i sure wouldnt post something like how would my heterosexual family fit into punta gorda. i will let you in on a little secret. we have some gays near us (no one calls them gays as to those around us they are known as the mos). they run around outside in girls track shorts making a complete spectacle of themselves. its like having liberace and elton john in the neigborhood. i guess in their minds thats fitting in and keeping a low profile.

i am still baffled by a group of people that want to be treated as normal and fit in why their focus every waking hour is devoted to being different.

also the reason that you do not see comments that are non supportive is the pressure to be politically correct and any comments made to the opposite are quickly deleted.

hope this helps with your home search

You mean like the asshats with their 5-foot high truck tires and cutoff sleeves and football jerseys and Bud Light? Are these hyper-masculine guys keeping a "low profile?" How about the 16 year old girls walking around the mall dressed like prostitutes? Is your vitriol reserved for them too?

Your reaction is "What vitriol?" I would hazard a reasonable estimation that when you ("those of US call THEM") "mos," (is it a grade school community?), you open yourself up being called out (so to speak).

Give me a break. Every group of people will have outliers. Painting the entire group with the same broad brush is ignorant. Yes, the people you describe are annoying, just like the people I describe. At least the guys you describe aren't menacing like the monster truck testosterone clowns. Sure, I find pretty much anyone seeking attention annoying, too, but I suspect there is more at work here than simply being annoyed.

Not everyone hates, unless one is a card-carrying GOP supporter like yourself. And for the record, most of the rest of the country seems to prefer gay people over "monster trucks".

ok you keep thinking that. venues that have monster truck events are typically sold out. cant say that about a gay parade. heck, they cant even get gay marriage approved in the great majority of states. keep on with the "fairy" tale that everyone loves them.

It's really sad that in this day and age there are so many people like you who have to "hate" anybody just because they are different from you. It is really a good thing you don't actually live in Sarasota. Most here are accepting of everyone, and this city has people from all walks of life and in general pretty much live-and-let-live. I don't blame the OP for asking his question. He certainly would want to avoid small-minded people like you.
