I figured we could start a new thread for this project, as I recall reading that the groundbreaking it set for Mid-October. Anyone in the area knows they have been hauling in fill dirt for a couple months now. A final site plan is sure high on the list!

I drove by there yesterday and it looked like the grading appears to have a finished appearance over a large area. I also saw some concrete pillars standing that I hadn't noticed before so I hope that means that it has begun in earnest.

Where is this project? Does that mean commercial building is on an upswing?

In a general way, think of it as the south west corner of the intersection of I75 and University Parkway. I don't think anyone would suggest that commercial construction is booming but I do see commercial projects scattered all around the area so, compared to past years, it is definitely improving.

Bbronston, I agree. It appears here and there commercial activity is overall on the rise. I imagine the area around the mall will definately result in an uptick of restaurants and ancillary businesses.

Interesting update, for anyone who is into site engineering. The reason for the huge mountain they are working on currently at the site, is not that the mall will be on top! It is called "surcharging" and it is to naturally compact the existing conditions below. Later they will spread the fill material that has been hauled in across the site I imagine.

They are calling this an upscale mall but it's just moving the Sak's and Macys and Dillards up north. Since I live near there I'm looking forward to the convenience but it's basically nothing that upscale. Personally I would have liked different retailers and not raided the Westfield's anchors which will affect that mall. To fill 100 slots is going to be tough in this economy. Being so close to the construction site, I'm not looking forward to the added traffic and dust, tho
