Mine didn't go up. In fact we put in a pool and it's like they never noticed. Maybe they'll get me next year.

Mine went up in Charlotte County as did our homeowner insurance.

Here is the link to the Sarasota County Property Appraiser and Tax Collector webs site that explains how it works:

If your pool was installed in 2012, then you swim for "free" this year. Improvements in one year go on the tax roll the following year. Don't worry, they will get you next year!

My taxes increased about $250 this year (10%) all due to installing a pool in 2011. Even with Homestead exemption, construction of any kind disqualifies you from the 3% max increase in assessed value.

They can only do the 10% once though correct? What I mean is they can't add another 10% the next year and the next? It's still so much cheaper than the taxes up North.

They can increase the assessment as they see fit ANYtime you pull a PERMIT for work (ahhh hemmmm, wink wink).

About how much does Homestead save you per year on a home assessed at 100,000? Also I understand if you are a widow/er you get an additional amount. I was reading up on it but didn't know if the widow exemption gives you $500 off the assessed value of your home in addition to the $25,000, or if it gives you an additional $500 per year off your taxes.

I know you have to be a permanent resident to get Homestead, so if you snowbird for a year or two, then become permanent what happens/ do they re-assess (sp?) your home every year and then once you are permanent and do homestead it can't go up more than 3%?
