Does anyone know how can a person report a contractor who ripped them off in Sarasota? Damaged the home, took the money, didn't do the work, left roof open to the elements, etc.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

Assuming they were licensed, I agree that I'd start with DBPR (Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation) but they can only deal with it administratively. There is a "File A Complaint" button on their home page. I'm not sure if there's an equivalent to FREC for this profession but, if there is, they would probably be the place to go. Maybe DBPR can steer you. Also, the usual Better Business Bureau complaint process. If they were insured and you got a copy of the proof, you might contact the insurance company and see what you have to do to make a claim against them.

If the contractor is a licensed contractor, here is the web link for the Department of Business and Professional Regulations - https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp

Click on the File a Complaint link.

Some people can work under another licensed contractor or may only have an occupational license for a particular city or county. If they are not licensed with the state, then you would file a complaint with Sarasota County. https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp

When you hire a trade person of a trade that is supposed to have state license, the person doing the work may not be a license holder. Many people work under the permission of a license holder not from the area. For instance, when you purchase something from places like Home Depot or Lowes that needs installation, read the fine print on their ads that show that the license to install is held by someone hundreds of miles from Sarasota. Reporting a bad contractor can become a difficult and lengthly task.

Have your lawyer send them a letter demanding compensation for damages. I would not let them finish the job,get a 3 quotes from other contractors and that's what he should be liable for. Also the BBB, I'm a licensed contractor in NJ and would do anything to keep my name off of that list. Good luck

make sure you don't have any liens placed on your property. It's easy for them to do that and then you have to fight it.

All the sources above are right on. You were unclear about "damaged" to home. If they created damage that was not there, it could be (I said could be) a criminal act in which point you could file report with Sheriff's office. If it is an unlicensed individual, often the concern over law enforcement will be greater than regulatory board they do not belong to.
