Hubby and I will be in Florida the first week of December checking into towns/neighborhoods for a planned move next spring/summer. We'll be looking up the coast from Englewood/Punta Gorda to Port Richey and want to check out the beaches, too!

Will we be comfortable swimming? Also, since this is one time of year when I've never been to Florida, what weight of clothing do you normally wear? I'm planning ahead because after our vacation and casual wear, I'm heading to Miami for a business function, too.

Thanks in advance! Getting pretty excited and can't believe that December is almost here!

The average Gulf water temp in December is in the 60's. So it is up to you as to how cold of water you want to swim in. I usually just wade in and walk along the shore when it is that cold. In the summer the water temp is in the 80's. If you want to swim in a pool, then you would want it to be heated because the water temp drops at night with the cooler temps.

I wear shorts in the 80's and 90's and capris in the 70's and long pants in the 50's and 60's. Most northerners are comfortable in shorts in the winter, but not me. I would bring a variety of clothes. Some shorts, some long pants for the evenings or early mornings and just a light jacket or sweater over a short sleeved shirt. We can get a cold snap now and then. Just check the online weather forecast before you start packing.

A dip in a heated pool mid-day is a definite. make sure you have access to one.

As for the Gulf, I don't have much trouble jumping in it in December, but it's not for everyone (unless you grew up on an Atlantic beach somewhere, in which case it will be a breeze for you).

December is a time of year here where you could go from an early morning stroll in a COAT to a 1PM swim to an 8PM night out wearing that darned coat again.

But at least you won't be shoveling any snow off the roof.

Enjoy your stay!

Yeppers, that snow thing is the main reason we're planning to move! Just looking at the stuff leaves me depressed and wanting to pull the covers over my head until March.

It does sound as if I'll be hitting the pool at my inlaws' condo complex instead of hitting the Gulf waters. I'm a big baby.

My wife and I were just in Sarasota 2 weekends ago, and the beach was pretty chilly - the only people we saw out in the water were surf fisherman and Paddle-Boarders wearing wetsuits.

It was overcast, though, so hopefully you'll get some sun and be able to enjoy it.

Have a great trip!

My husband swims in the ocean all year long. Me? I will not get in under 80 degrees.

I think I could handle mid-70s, but 60s? Not so much.

Two years ago, Sarasota had a cold snap. It actually dropped down to 28 at night- 40's during the day. My husband and I refused to give in and walked on the beach in ski jackets, definitely not swimming weather. I'd bring layers, maybe a polar fleece. It could be warm and sunny hopefully. Enjoy
