I'm early 50's and own my own virtual business (so my job comes with me) and am considering Sarasota (only on what I've heard about it - I may have been there in the 80's but I can't remember). I do realize that I need to come and visit but I'm trying to narrow down the places I come to visit as there are many that interest me.

Would it be possible to find a small "character" home or apartment to rent there? Does anyone have an idea of how much that would be?

Is there a lot to do there for someone who is single?

thanks!

Yes, there is a lot to do in Sarasota for a single person. It just depends on what type of activities you enjoy. If you do a search in the Sarasota forum for activities you will see a lot of lists of things to do.

Also, as far as rentals - prices are all over the place depending on what you are looking for. You can check out some of the rental properties on the following sites to see if anything is available in your price range.

I would look at Towles Court, Burns Court, downtown, or Laurel Park. You'll pay for it but completely outstanding areas. Also, you can find some cool, old Spanish homes in the Southside Village area.

Great suggestions, and I second them ^^^.

There is a lot to do in the area for people of all ages and marital status!

Those neighborhoods are definitely nice and very popular, which is why the rental rates are going to be more expensive (home prices too).

If you're looking for neighborhoods with more character (ie not box style ranch homes?), there are a number of little neighborhoods that have a mix of 40's & 50's bungalows, cottages, mid centry modern homes mixed in with the typical FL ranch-style homes and prices are more affordable that Towles or Southside Village areas.

There are a number of little neighborhoods south of Ringling and north of Webber, west of Tuttle Ave that are within zip codes 34231 and 34239. Some people call it the Arlington Park area, others South Gate area (although the actual South Gate neighborhood is mainly east of there and consists of 1960's ranch-style homes).

Neighborhoods have names like: Hyde Park Terrace, Cottages in the Pines, South Side & Loma Linda Parks, La Linda Terrace, Grove Lawn, Home Lands, Battle & Turner, Rustic Lodge and Sunnyside Park.

Another cute little neighborhood just north of there is Paver Park.

You can usually find rental rates in these areas running from $850/mo for a 2 bdrm/1 bath to about $1400/mo for an updated 2 or small 3 bdrm/2 bath home. Rentals in these neighborhoods tend to go quickly, so you have to act accordingly if one you like comes on the market.

As to condo communities with character, that may be more difficult. It would help to know what you would define as character for condos.
