We are doing the same-moving from MA to Sarasota. We are moving, because my Mom and Sister live there. We have been, and are going in a few weeks, to do more planning.
But, this is what I have learned....Native Floridians don't like us coming, taking thair jobs, so you may get some negativity. They don't like Yankees! They are going to tell you it's unbelievably hot, the neighborhoods suck, everything to make you not want to move to FL!
I have some advice for you! In Bradenton...stay weather you are renting or buying, stay away from Martin Luther Kin Blvd. And the #'d streets, like "12th street." That's the getto area. I drove down that way, several times, and I was scared. You should look up crimemappers.com: The Leading Crime Mappers Site on the Net, before you decide on a place or area. My Mom lives in a gated community, and she feels safe, she just loves it!
About jobs....My brother-in-law went to Sarasota, with a chef job, in line, because, he too is a chef! He hated it! But, stuck with it, until he found a job working with a food company, selling to owners of businesses. But, the place her worked at wouldn't allow him to be creative, and he is an AMAZING chef! So, it may not go the way you want, when you get down there, but, you will figure it out and LOVE it!
What we did, is found the best schools! My sister has my neice going to a really great one, in Sarasota. Plus, we LOVED the area. We are selling our house, here in MA. Getting our finances in order, finding jobs, getting everything in order, and then making the move with my family, myhorse, my husband, 2kids,2dogs, to Sarasots. We have help in Sarasota. It doesn't sound like you have to much. Let me know, if you wanna talk. Since, we are in the same boat.

Most people here are NOT native Floridians. Most of us are transplants. Some of the posts seem very harsh but they are just being honest about jobs here. We retired to here so jobs were not an issue with our move. We have steady income. People are just wanting you to be realistic and make sure you PLAN your move. You have to be able to take care of yourselves, the food pantries here can't keep up as it is. Your children are not going to understand why you have to live in your car if you don't plan ahead.

Make sure you have about 6 months worth of savings when you get down here so you're not stuck.

Believe what you want. Most of us were Yankees at some point. Just do your home work and planning, I don't want anyone to say "told ya so". We planned for 6 years and made it happen.

My goodness... there is no conspiracy to "keep the yankees away from our jobs" or general dislike for "yankees". Everyone you'll meet is pretty much from the Midwest or North East. Natives are few and far between.

People are just being brutally honest because so many people post on here, or just come here expecting paradise, and Sarasota or Florida in general just don't perhaps meet their lofty perfect life expectations. Telling someone it's hot isn't to keep people away, its just a reality check to make sure you're aware of it. I've literally seen people post how much they can't stand it come July, and rant about how they're going to Carolina. I'm just happy to not have winter so I will just suck it up, but I'm glad I'm aware of it.

Yes there are bad neighborhoods. It's not said to keep you away, its just a reality check. Again for me its fine, but a month ago I saw someone describe the section of 41 near the airport to be sketchy and unsafe. I'm still blown away someone would think that as you can tell haha, but it's just goes to show some people have different expectations. Granted I wouldn't open a Williams Sonoma there, but if you're afraid to see a pawn shop and a Cadillac on 24 inch rims for sale then Florida is not for you.

People are just stating realities, there's no conspiracy. I've been here four months and love it, but I'm happy I was able to weigh the pro's and con's first and know what to expect. It sounds like you have things well thought out horseluvr, I'm sure you'll do great.

What area are you talking about? because what we discussed was way higher than $8.00?? I have been in touch with a couple other restaurants in the Bradenton area that are hireing...so I'm confused. @ kiggy you better believe it brotha...lol...so back to my question, can someone tell me some GOOD news about the Bradenton area or other surrounding areas that would be a good place to raise my family?
Moneymyke, this is the deal. The job he is offering you will only pay $8-9 per hour HOWEVER, he is going to work you 50-60 hours per week averaging a much higher rate.

I'm not trying to keep you from coming here, I'm a transplant from South Carolina, I was in your shoes.

What I'm telling you is fact.

Season is here and it really kicks in mid February but come June, you'll be lucky to get 30 hours a week. Then what do you do?

Restaurant managers will do and say anything.

Another big thing to avoid is someone who wants to pay you $8 per hour for your 90 days for your 'probabationary' period and then they'll bump you up to $12 an hour. That raise will never materialize, you'll quit, then he'll have gotten through season only paying a cook $8 an hour.

Talk to the guys on the line. Find out how long they've been there.

Someone with a good line crew pays well and those guys don't leave. A restaurant manager that is talking to someone on the phone who is 1000+ miles away and cannot find help in Florida is a problem.

I'm a Yankee if ever there was one, born and raised in New York City. I was in my late thirties when I came here, if you're smart, you'll listen to what the majority are saying here, most people who live in Florida are northerners, many are retired and don't give a damn about jobs. I'm disabled, I'm not concerned about jobs either. What is being said here is true.

A word to the wise is sufficient.
