I'm considering a move to Sarasota with my 2 kids, ages 7 and 9 and would like to zero in on a few schools to consider. I've been reading reviews on Greatschools, but most of the reviews are really old. I've looked at school websites, but that doesn't really provide much guidance as to how well the school serves its population and how happy the families are. I'm not interested in Pineview at the moment. I've read about it, but it doesn't sound like the right fit for us.

It seems like Riverview is the better high school, yes?

Southside seems like a highly rated elementary school, but then it feeds into Sarasota High which is the less desirable HS, right?

I'd love to hear input on Sarasota schools from those in the area. What are families saying about the schools? What are they happy with, and what needs improvement?

Does anyone here have input on private schools in the area? That is another option for us, but I'm not sure how good or bad the private schools are there.

Lastly, we would be coming from a large city, and I'm a little concerned about moving to a city that will require more driving and less walking. Any areas with good schools and walkability?

Why don't you just look for a house in an area that you really love and work out the school situation afterwards? In less than ten years, both of your kids will be in college, you'll be empty nesters, and you could possibly be in a home you don't like.

Sarasota has the best schools in the state. Pine View is the best school in Sarasota and the best school in the state. I don't think it matters where you live in Sarasota if your kid qualifies. IQ over 120.

Education is as much the kids home life as it is the school.

Good luck.

Thanks for the input.

I'm divorced, so once the kids are in college I will be on my own, and I can move wherever I want. Right now I need a good home in a good school district.

As I said, Pine View is not going to be a good option for us. My kids need to be in a school where the teachers are going to help them if they fall behind. They are already behind in some areas and need to be in a school where the teachers will go the extra mile to help them learn the material or where they can receive resource help in certain subjects. My understanding is that Pine View is not a school for kids who have learning difficulties.

Does anyone have opinions on Phillippi Shores or Gulf Gate? What about input on Sarasota High vs. Riverview?

Okay, I didn't get the part about not needing PV. A couple of the other regulars can help you, they have kids in the system and one was a teacher here.

FWIW, I've heard Sarasota high is crappy, I've heard Sarasota high is fantastic.

I also am a single mom with three kids, two are 13 going into 8th and a 4 yr old.It is hard enough being single, but I hope to find a school that does not have drugs and partying and such,I don't hear great things about the Florida schools, but I do need the cheaper lifestyle.

My sister's kids go to Willis, which is in Lakewood Ranch. I think it is an amazing school, compared to schools here in MA. One of the HUGE factors, for me, is for my kids to go to a good school! Out of all the schools I visited, while in Sarasota, Willis was by far, the BEST!!!!
They have a bunch of Apple computers donated to them- They have a great gifted program. Most of the kids are great! They wear uniforms. Ifwe were moving to that area, would be going there. But, I have a job inN.Port...so, I am going to look at schools, there, in a few weeks.

Sarasota county has one of the best school systems in the state of Florida. It also has Pine View School for the Gifted, which was ranked the top school in Florida and one of the top schools in the Nation. It is a public school and the requirements are that you live in Sarasota county, have an IQ of 130 or more, pass the achievement tests required and have teacher recommendations. I have a child who attends PV. It's a great school but it's not for every kid. It services grades 2nd-12th. Here's some more info on that subject:
Welcome to Pine View School
Pine View School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Public Elites - Newsweek.com
Pine View wraps up perfect Olympics | HeraldTribune.com | Sarasota Florida | Southwest Florida's Information Leader
America's Best High Schools: Gold Medal List - US News and World Report

There are many other fantastic schools in Sarasota and Manatee county's Here's a website where you can see how the schools are rated:
School Accountability Report...
or www.GreatSchools.com

Here are the school districts by zone: http://www.sarasotacountyschools.net...lrp/zones.aspx

Southside services most of the downtown area south of Main St. North of Main would be mostly Booker school district. The Palmer Ranch area is mostly Ashton school district. There are other schools in the area but these are ones that I have either had personal experience with or I have friends that have kids in the schools.

Sarasota ranks as one of the top districts in the state by a number of measures, including test scores, graduation rates and teacher compensation.

It offers distinctive programs tailored to different student needs, including Florida's only school for the gifted, the state's largest special needs school and one of a handful of career-focused high schools.

Alright, if I were checking out schools other than Pine View these are the schools that I would look into, in order. This is also the order they fall in if you look at the stats on the state of FL.

I'll throw some zip codes in as well to use for a general guideline but make sure you double check them with the map provided and the local school board as the map/zip codes may change slightly if they add a new school.

I'm going to also include a few neighborhoods within each zip code. Keep in mind that there are many other communities in each zip code worth checking out. I'm just trying to give you a starting point. Also if the community is very large it might encompass two or three different schools.

Please use this website when searching for properties: www.myfloridahomesmls.com It's the most up to date website.
