Just wondering if anyone attends the Unitarian Universalist Church in Sarasota?

If you do, how do you like it? Are there many families with children there? How about families with grandparents? Or single elderly? What about artists?

What's the best thing about it? The worst?

Pros or cons?

Thanks so much!

Hi,
I've been a member of this church for almost two years and a Unitarian for about eleven. I find the people here to be very friendly and the activities varied. There is something for everyone - from jazz concerts on Sundays to controversial lectures on Fridays. Since most people come to Sarasota from "parts yonder", going to church (and this church in particular) is a great way to meet people who are open, progressive, like a spirited discussion, and enjoy doing good. We have an active social justice program for those who like to actively give of themselves, Get-Together Dinners where you can get to know a small group of people over a shared meal, an innovative religious education program for children and activities like movie discussion groups, book clubs, "See Sarasota" tours and, well, a lot of "stuff". I heartily recommend that you give it a try when you are in town. I encourage people to come many times before deciding if it's for them. Some sermons are better than others; sometimes we have guest ministers and sometimes our very own Roger Fritts is at the helm. You'll appreciate his sense of humor. We do.

I am responding as the President of the Congregation and a long-time member. Our congregation has about 370 members, and about 150 friends and people associated with the church who are not members. We have many families with children and an active religious education program for children and youth. We have several grandparents who either are raising their grandchildren or just bring their grandchildren on Sundays to the church. We have many single elderly folks and many retirement age (thereabout) singles, along with many married or partnered couples in these same age groups. We welcome everyone where they are on their life path, and whomever they choose as their family, so we have straight folks and people who identify as GLBT- all are welcome here. In addition to a warm, friendly community, that is one of the best things about this congregation. Also we encourage a free and responsible search for truth and meaning, so wherever you are on your spiritual path, we welcome you.

After a lifetime as a Catholic and Lutheran, I joined the UU four years ago, after discovering that I have actually been a UU for most of my adult life. New to Sarasota, I joined this church last year. I like the Sunday services (minister's message and wonderful music); commitment to social justice; intellectual, social and community engagement; and opportunities to learn. This is a growing congregation with a commitment to families.
