Hi I recently rented a single family home in bradenton . The Land Lord has informed me that to have access to the mother in law suite it would cost me an additional 400.00 Is this legal being we have one power meter and one water meter as well as 1 Mail Box I want to fight this as everything will be on our bills and I don't want just anyone to be able to move in around my children . What are my legal rights if anyone could give some insite to this matter i would be greatful

What does your lease say? If it doesn't specify that the in-law apartment is part of your living space, then it's not. That said, he might not be able to rent it, either. Check the zoning, it's possible that it's not legal for a non-relative to occupy the in-law apartment.

You can ask that the utility costs be shared. You should not have to pay additional costs. I understand the concern about someone being around your children. I agree with the person who suggests you look at what your lease says.

Another take....if the apartment has the same address as your place and the lease does not specifically exclude the space from yours, you can argue that you are already leasing that space. Be prepared to involve an attorney.

How was the ad listed for the house? Was there another ad for the MIL suite?
