Although there are definitely more festivals and special events in the winter months, you can still find fun things to do in Sarasota & Bradenton in the summer.

If you are thinking about getting a new pet, the Manatee County Humane Society is hosting a kitten adopt-a-thon all weekend long at various Manatee locations, including the main shelter at 2515 14th St W in Bradenton, Nate's Place Adoption Center at 8437 Cooper Creek (Sarasota outlet mall shopping center) and Lakewood Ranch humane society shelter at 7334 Trade Ct. Adoption fee is $25 per kitten. For more information call 747-8808 x310.

Two free music events in Sarasota Friday evening - the Van Wezel is kicking off the summer Friday Fests at 5 pm on their grounds by the bay front. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets but not food/coolers as food & beverages will be available for purchase at the site.

There's also a Live from Downtown Sarasota It's Friday Night event, 6 - 9 pm at Towles Court in downtown Sarasota, near Adams and Washington). Live music, food vendors, crafts, etc.

Friday thru Sunday is a Boat Show at the Bradenton Convention Center in Palmetto, Adults $5, children 12 & under enter free. Hours: Friday 1 - 8, Sat 10 - 7 and Sunday 10 - 5.

Saturday at 2 pm is the Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally in Bradenton at 617 Cortez Rd W.

Saturday is also the Stand Up Paddleboard Races at Siesta Key Beach, 7:30 am - 4 pm. Registration to participate requires fees but spectators have free admission. This is the first in a series of three races.

On Sunday Sarasota resident Nik Wallenda will tight-rope walk over a section of the Grand Canyon on live tv, on the Discovery Channel. Sarasota will be hosting a street party 7 - 11 pm in honor of Nik's walk. There will be circus performers, live music, food & large screens to watch Nik's historic tight-rope walk.

If you're new to the Sarasota area, one of the biggest events of the summer kicks off the following weekend, the week long celebration of the Suncoast Offshore Racing Festival. The big superboats come to town for a week's worth of fun events, including parades & parties leading up to the big offshore boat races.
