I need to make a cucumber tomato and onion salad for Saturday party and want to have some good tasting tomatoes--
the ones I have bought in local grocery stores--and I have tried Sweet Bay, WalMart and Publix stores--have all been as bad or worse than I would get in my local TX groceries--
even the ones that are supposedly "vine-ripened"
so I need some farmer market stuff but need to get Friday so can make ahead of time

suggestions for tasty tomatoes--
willing to pay premium if required but don't want to go to 15 different places looking for the good stuff...

trust some of you know the best source...

I'm hoping someone has a suggestion, all the tomatoes I've had so far are also sub par.

Good luck. When my aunt moved here a few years ago, that was the reason she almost moved back to Ohio. Maybe try the flea markets. I know the Red Barn usually has produce, but can't tell you the quality. Also, try the local farmer's markets. I know Sarasota has one on Saturday mornings.

I tried a couple farmers markets and they were good but not that flavor that they have up North. Guess it's a small sacrifice. I'm still open to suggestions though.

FL grown tomatoes are typically available April-May at all the non supermarket produce places. FL tomatoes are awesome. Tomatoes from other areas are shipped for other seasons. I supposed midwestern tomatoes will start arriving in August/Sept.

Yoder's Produce on Bahia Vista has good ones. Yoder's also has a produce store in Sarasota Square Mall. Since Yoder's is Amish run, I assume they have an Ohio/Indiana produce source.

Any of the Amish farm stands will be good. I buy mine from Dean's on Whitfield - FAR better than in the stores and cheaper. They always have local when available. Detwiler's should have good ones, and Yoder's was mentioned.

The soil in Florida produces flavorless tomatoes/watermelon,etc. Look for produce grown outside of Florida to have a better chance at getting something with flavor.

The red barn in Bradenton should have some. I've bought them in the past and they were always good.

I too recommend Dean's at the corner of Whitfield and Tallevast. $1.59 per pound and they actually taste like tomatoes! The farm fresh eggs are also quite good
.

OK--Yoder's is close at the Mall and Detweiler's has new stand in Venice close to me
so guess I can try those first--buy a couple and eat to see quality

I can understand why the soil of FL would grow tasteless tomatoes--
my husband had to dig a French drain to help with rainwater flowing into one side of our garage--under the garage door with a new gasket...
the dirt is just not dirt--it is silt or something...very easy to dig but not what we consider "dirt"...

thanks for the help...
