Read the names for the hurricanes/storms that might come and while most of the male choices are Hispanic the most incongruous one I think I have seen in long time is "Jerry"....
that just strikes me as a most unthreatening hurricane...
of course that means it will turn out to be a bad dude if it actually gets used...
but Jerry???

So what are the names? I think hurricane names that are "nicknames" (like "Jerry", "Bob", "Charley", etc.) are ridiculous. They sound so silly, yet have the potential of being devastating.

IMO When a storm is "named" so called hurricane insurance takes over from traditional insurance policies.
ie: If a sudden wind knocked a tree over ruining your roof traditional insurance would be responsible. When a storm is named and the tree falls over traditional insurance will no longer cover it.
I agree the names are silly. They create a buzz and add identity. Kind of like when they name manatees.

I remember hearing that the storm names are taken from the names of employees and family members of the hurricane center in Miami. I suppose that might explain why there are so many Hispanic names but I doubt they make an effort to use names that convey an ominous feeling even though it might seem that way sometimes. Andrew was one of the worst but I still can't put "Andrew" and "devastation" together in my mind.

yes--but Andy would have been more incongruous--don't you think?

This link gives names and also explanation of how they are chosen
no mention of employees' families being the source

That's funny...you're right! I think I was watching a hurricane special on the Weather Channel when they said the names were drawn from family members. Maybe that is where they get them from when they suggest them to the international group.

Well, if you think Jerry is dumb, wait until 2014 when there is a Hurricane Teddy.

Anyway, thanks for the link. Isn't it weird to read that benign-looking list and realize one of those storms could be the next Katrina? I sure hope we don't have another Irene or (storm) Sandy up here in the Northeast -- I can't take it.
