MLK and Washington is not a good area. I don't feel afraid of it in the middle of the day but I would not be walking there at 3am without a Mawduce.

I believe people are suggesting that the crime is in tourist areas because tourists are easy marks for criminals. Tourists carry money and valuables and usually are gawking at the sites and don't notice potential pick pockets and thieves. Their guard is not up after that 3rd drink.

Exactly - PLUS, revolving tourism cycles temporarily and artificially inflate the population of an area, and there is an obvious corresponding bump in crime. However, statistically, the incidence of crime is expressed as a ratio based off of permanent residents, only.

If you ask any law enforcement professional, they'll tell you that the violent crime rate is almost zero for those who do not involve themselves with the buying or selling of drugs. Bad things happen, of course, but if you use sound judgement, you should be alright wherever you are.

Glad you made that point. Not all crimes are equal. Having someone walk off with your shopping bag while you are getting buzzed at a outdoor cafe is not the same as as breaking and entering or car jacking or being robbed at gun point and then shot.

I think Sarasota is pretty safe but you really should not let your guard down anywhere. Don't walk alone and night and if you walk your dog at night carry a weapon like I do. Don't jog in the woods alone. I am always aware of my surroundings when I am in parking lots and stores. I always have my keys ready to get into my car. I don't linger around unknown areas in the dark. If I see someone out of place I keep my eye on them. Even the nicest areas can be unsafe -

Tourists are flush with cash and easy marks - follow them wherever they go if you're a professional criminal and you'll never be out of work! Don't be so naive - YES, surely some smart crooks come here with the tourists and leave when they leave.

the crime is committed by LOCALS who are attracted by the rich tourists here.....but every Sarasotan is in danger from these thugs, not just the tourists are in danger....that is the point to be made. To blithely dismiss Sarasota's crime rate as being "caused by tourism" is silly....the crime rate exists, and it endangers ALL in Sarasota, not just tourists. Those who make money from tourism would have it be believed that this Paradise is "totally safe"-----ain't so, as those British tourists discovered not too long ago.....
