Hi there, what areas are safe to walk around during the day? During the night? Where would you advise staying away from? I will soon be staying in Sarasota for a few months, and would like to get my bearings! Thanks all.

Well, I can see everyone is shying away from responding. I will try to help & be as honest & frank as I can. Sarasota is generally safe but as with any city there are good parts & not so good parts. Newtown is the place everyone is thinking of when you say "bad part of town". High crime, shootings, drugs (you can figure it out). It's a relatively small area & easy to avoid. There are other parts of town I drive around & shop during the day but wouldn't be wondering around at night. Heck, many areas I wouldn't be wondering around at night but that's just common sense & could really apply anywhere in this country, not just Sarasota. Common sense will get you home safe 99% of the time.

Tell us where are living & working & then people can give better suggestions where the best & worst places would be for you to walk/bike/hang out, etc....

You can also do a search of the forum as questions similar to yours have been asked many times.

Good luck!

New town, but keep in mind Sarasota has the 100th worst crime rate in the country, and Manatees crime rate is through the roof.

oooh, i'm so scared. 100th worst. imagine that.
and a lot of us don't respond because we're sick and tired of answering the same questions over and over when a simple search on the forum would give all the answers they want.

I'd say 100th is pretty good when you consider all the tourism from every corner of the world coming here.

I'm in a wheelchair, and I feel safe here. I've lived here 7 years so far, all together, and have never been the victim of any crime.

In the nation? Other cities that are tourist driven, outside of FL usually don't have that problem.

There are other tourist driven cities outside of Florida on that very list.

Tourism destinations always have unusually high crime rates. Chalk it up to transient crime being divided by the permanent population=skewed numbers.
