Mixon's food competition was neat. Lot of kids from local schools with some delicious treats. Thanks for the tip on this, always like an excuse to head to Mixon's. Love their orange & vanilla ice cream twist. Mmmmmmmm!

Went to the Siesta Key Sand sculpting around 3 PM - there was nothing for children - must have missed it. Also did not want to pay $5 a person to get closer when I could see the sand sculptures from behind the barrier - there were not many sculptures.

Thank you Sunshine Rules for taking the time to post the weekend events going on around the area. My family and I just moved here in July, and are not that familiar with the area. My wife works 12 hr. shifts on the weekends, so I have to try and find things for my 6 and 3 year old to do. So far we went to the pumpkin patch, mullet toss, chalk festival, and sand sculpting contest. We had a great time at all! As far as there being nothing for children at Seista Key, there really wasn't anything specifically set up for kids. So we looked at the sculptures for about 30 minutes and spent the next two and a half hours walking on the wonderful beach, watching the dolphins, and playing in the sand and my kiddos loved every minute of it! Thanks again!!!

The info booth had coupons for $2.00 off, per person. You missed so much by not seeing them from the front....that is where the detail was!!!
Thank you, Sunshine :-), for the service, you treat us with.

Thanks for the kind words. Although I often have to work weekends, my husband and I do like to attend local events and festivals when possible. So, since I am looking things up anyway, it makes sense to share them with everyone here. If the info is sometimes incomplete, please don't shoot the messenger as I am posting locations/event info as given on the various websites and calendars. It would be nice if there was one comprehensive, "go to" website to find a list of all of the local events coming up each weekend. Try looking up car shows, it's even worse.

There are lots of either free or fairly cheap things to do for families in our area, not including the special events every weekend.

Things such as:
Sarasota Jungle Gardens (kids love the bird reptile shows)
Sarasota Sailor Circus www.sailorcircus.org
Sarasota Youth Sailing Program 924-5118
Stardust Skate Center on 12th St 365-6888
John & Ringling Museum of Art is free each Monday The Ringling
Myakka River State Park - price/car load + extra for airboat ride to see the alligators www.myakkariver.org
Mote Marine -- touch tank is awesome www.mote.org
Ski-A-Rees Ski show is free, each Sunday, 2 pm Ken Thompson Pkwy by Mote Marine
South Lido Nature Park -- south tip of Lido Key, past all of the condos, nature trails & picnic area
Anna Maria Island -- ride the free trolley up & down, visit Coquina Beach
Big Cat Habitat & Sanctuary -- on Palmer Blvd in Sarasota 371-6377
Sarasota Childrens Garden -- www.sarasotachildrensgarden.com
See Snooty the Manatee at the South FL Mueum - Bishop Planetarium - Parker Manatee Aquarium on 10th St in downtown Bradenton 746-4131

As we head towards the holidays there are lots and lots of family friendly events happening in our area, so stay tuned....

I am grateful that the information was posted even though the sand festival was not that great - I wish my two boys 9 and 11 would enjoy walking around for 2 hours but they would be bored - I guess they are spoiled here in paradise. Did not see the $2 off - darn - not that I would pay $3 - just too cheap I guess.
