The US Dept of Energy's Science Office is who provides people to CERN for work on the Large Hadron Collider. Since I work on a lot of papers that come out of CERN, I'm sure I've reviewed some of their work or probably even refereed their papers. Quantum Physics is my bread and butter. I would imagine it's less than 6 degrees, here. Pretty small community, but huge on a geographical scale. Everyone is spread out everywhere in the world!

Ok, about radiant barrier. We had our house in Texas reroofed, and had to have new decking at the time. Came with foil radiant barrier pre installed. It cut our electric costs by a third. Just that quick. Another 8" of blown insulation also made a big difference. Installed it ourself, paid for itself in 4 months.

As to the gray spray-on, I routinely went into attics doing inspections in the summer, a good 40-50 degree differential where the sprayed radiant barrier is in place vs no radiant barrier.

If you are doing an existing home, the spray radiant barrier will work just fine. Replacing the decking, get the pre installed radiant barrier.

Either will pay for itself in a very short time.

Not saying we've crossed paths directly but I do attend some pretty swank parties by echelon DOE.

That's fantastic! All that benefit from a .0007 thick film of aluminum.

Technically what you got preattached is a Low-E product rather than a Radiant Barrier.

A radiant barrier reflects heat back to source whereas a low-e product impedes re-radiative effect of the absorbed energy, like from the sun heating the metal roof.

Great Post. Should be thought provoking for readers.

Thank you and take care. Good stuff.
