Hi everyone~
I'll be moving to Florida from Cincinnati at the end of 2014-ish and am researching the best locale for the next 5-10 years of my life. I'm 50, single-never-married, attractive, healthy, more progressive, agnostic, GLBT-friendly hetero woman wondering where in Florida I will feel most contented and connected socially.

I'm looking for good apartment rental options for 1BR in the $750 +/- range; as near the beach as possible

My main priorities are:
Walking or VERY short driving time to great beaches (as in 5 min)

Laid-back area (I'm not into bling, nightlife, bars, etc, unless they are very chill)

Good restaurants, coffeehouses, bookstores, cinema, maybe outdoor concert venue

Not overwhelmingly family-values; lots of singles in their 40's, 50's who are healthy and active

Not heavy on the retiree vibe (I'll be working until I die --and I don't have much in common with married couples who have raised families, been married forever and are enjoying their empty nests...and they would not be incredibly interested in me socially, I don't think. Understandably.

Animal friendly!!

Thank you! I will be grateful for any feedback and happy to answer additional questions.

You need to go on some dating site. There is no one place in Sarasota that fits a certain life style unless your want into a 55plus community. If you want to move to Sarasota go spend some time, invest in looking around and make up your mind. The closer to the beach you get the farther away you get from that 750. One bed apts and condos can be had for that, prices are rising and I would not say 750 will buy you anything special. I rent a 3 bed two bath unit in a nice area about 4 miles from the beach for 1100. If I had a 1 bed on Siesta key I would be getting a heck of a lot more. Many close to the beach rentals are seasonal because they can get 2500 or more a month. I think I am even low its more like 2500 a week on some. Depends on your definition of close. Arcadia is close to the beach if your taking about Arcadia vs Kansas. All of Sarasota is close to the beaches. Siesta key is not my fav beach. Its the most crowded of all the beaches, Lido is better IMO, as is Manasota, Venice ect. Less crowded and more parking. I don't know of any areas in Sarasota where the bible thumpers rule, so the LGBT thing is fine most anywhere. Coming form Cincinnati I would think most any place in Sarasota is a thousand times better. No offense but I have been there and would not live there and a million dollar bet.

@saxondale--

Thanks for replying.

I have no interest in dating sites. Finding someone to date in my new life in Florida is actually a pretty low priority. I'm more interested in an overall general comfort level with new friendships, etc.

Glad you've had the chance to sample our delights here in Ohio.

Your rent for a decent apartment is unrealistic. Sarasota is expensive.

Near the beach plan on spending around $1500+ for a one bedroom.

Gulf Gate Apartments are very near Siesta Key, about a mile away and is also walking distance to a lot of shopping and dining. I think they would be about $1000 for a one bedroom.

Default It just so happens…

Hey Mangojuice,

I am in the same boat as you … planning on checking out Sarasota and the area for possible relocation soon… and coincidentally just this afternoon called at that Gulf Gate Apt complex, which is pet friendly, by the way, for dogs up to 20lbs. I am looking for a 2/2 which they told me is $995. I don't know how much a one bedroom is, but this seems reasonable. Of course I haven't been there in person yet to check it out in person, but it sounds good over the Internet (don't they all) and it is in a highly walkable area and about 10 minutes from the beach.
Maybe someone on this forum can advise more about the place and the area. I find this site and the peeps very useful and the information quite enlightening.

Good luck on your quest. I know it's pretty daunting moving to a totally different locale and trying to plan ahead. I'm going through it, too

Rented in Saratoga Place on Palmer Ranch...rent is much higher than $750 but really nice place! I have seen Gulf Gate from the outside and it appears average....not great, not bad. Great area of shopping and places to eat...residential area to the east and bike riding distance to the beach west of the area. To get to the beach you must cross 41 and head over the bridge. Very doable....but not just out the back door.

I moved into Gulf Gate Apartments in what I thought was a temporary move that ended up being 18 months.

The location cannot be beat but they are expensive for what you get. I had a 2/1 and I think the square feet was only 700. The management company takes excellent care of the grounds. Three pools and the big one stays heated in the winter.

How did you find the area to be? Was it nice? Also, was there any mold problem in there?
