In reading the article it seems that Benderson is suggesting 2 main things to help alleviate the traffic: 1) a trolley 2) bicycle paths.

IMO those 2 things alone will not be enough to do much to solve the traffic issue.

I just love these lines:

Officials are counting on the project being completed before the 2017 World Rowing Championships at nearby Nathan Benderson Park.

Sarasota County Commissioner Joe Barbetta said local officials hoped construction would begin in early 2015. He expressed concern about getting the work done before the 2017 World Rowing Championships.

They don't give two hoots about people who live or work in the area.

And after yesterday's Primary election results, be prepared for even more building of houses, and less roads, greenery, etc.
Of course, no one cares - less than 20% voter turnout.

20% turnout for a Primary is good, isnt it? Most people just wait for the general election.

Others remember the only 'roundabout' was on St Armand's....well also at Siesta and Swift ?

Sarasota (county and city) has always had its head up its butt about forward thinking planning for roads and traffic, Manatee County has been far more proactive in the past 20 years...just ask Benderson.

Prime example : allowing residents of the Meadows to monkeywrench the four-laning of Honore from University to 17st. That would have helped a long time ago. Look how long the Cattlemen Rd extension was strung out ! and the Honore ext south past Fruitville ! it's been awful.

Anyone remember the awwful timing of lights on Tamiami south?

Remember how LONG it was before Sarasota re-vamped and widened CLARK ROAD ? How about the gateway to the city, Fruitville Road....and that's STILL a disaster through downtown.

Look at what Sarasota did to Lemon !

Nixed a second bridge to LBK as well.

Remember all the local bs lobbying and screwing up the roads around S Ospreu, S Orange and the fiasco around Hillview and the Hospital ?? And it still is a mess.

Remember the hand wringing about Bee Ridge Extended ? geezus The conflict on Beneva with the Forest Hill bs crowd and CC?
Bingo. You hit the nail right on the head. The way it appeared to me was that the cabal ruling Sarasota did not want to encourage development in order to keep Sarasota a small town, so they figured if you don't build the roads--they won't come. Obviously that type of urban planning does not work, hence Sarasota is always playing catch-up to unclog already clogged arteries. I remember in the 80's when a bridge to LBK was suggested, but the idea that the riff-raff from Sarasota could invade the landed gentry so easily put a stop to that.

BTW, you forgot a big one--the decade long fight to get rid of the Ringling Causeway drawbridge, despite the nightmare traffic backed up on 41 and St. Armand's. There was an entire movement of people who lived in condos by the causeway who fought it forever as they were afraid of what would happen to their views.

FL is one of 13 states that holds closed primaries. If you are registered as an Independent, you cannot vote in FL primaries, only registered Democrats and Republicans can vote. As of a few years ago, there were over 48,000 registered Independents in Manatee county. Another issue is the time of year for the primary - August. We have many older residents with summer homes out of state, people out of state on vacations. Voters could get absentee ballots, but many do not.

Good city planners consider all proposals for building subdivisions based upon ease of access to roads considering traffic requirements, power lines, water and sewage before a subdivision is given the go ahead to build on the site and become open to the public.

There should be no building until traffic needs are coordinated with a building schedule.

Calling your city councilor will bring the problem to their attention.
