Chilly for Friday evening, but Saturday and Sunday are looking to be sunny and warm, great weather for the many outdoor events in and around the Sarasota area. By the way, my husband has family in Colorado - they were dealing with 11 degrees below zero the past 2 nights. I am digging out my winter blankets for our Tuesday night weather, when it is supposed to get down into the 40's. Yes, as a long time FL resident anything under 50 is COLD.


Friday Night free music -- Venice Centennial Park, at the gazebo, starts 7 pm, bring your own chairs.

Drag Queen Bingo -- The Players Theatre in Sarasota, starts at 8 pm. For ticket info go to The Players Theatre

Friday - Sunday

Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition -- Siesta Key Beach. 20 teams competing for prizes. Food & other vendors, 10 am - 5:30 pm, tickets $6/adults, under 12 get in free.

Sarasota Chalk Festival -- in VENICE on Miami Ave between Nokomis & Nassau and at the Venice Airport Festival Grounds. I really want to know -- why didn't they just change the name to the Venice Chalk Festival?

FL Studio Theatre presents "Hairspray" with shows each day, Theater on Palm Ave in Sarasota. Info at Florida Studio Theatre

Asolo Repertory Theatre presents "South Pacific," show time and ticket info at Asolo Rep Theatre - or all 351-8000.

Gem, Jewelry & Bead Show -- Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, 10 am - 5 pm each day, $4/admission.


Saturday morning farmers markets -- downtown Sarasota market at Lemon and Central Sarasota market at the county Technical Institute at Proctor & Beneva.

Bradenton Farmers Market -- Old Main St in downtown Bradenton 9 am - 2 pm.

Designer Tag Sale -- by the Historical Society of Sarasota, Crocker Church on 12th St in downtown Sarasota, 10 am - 3 pm.

Lakewood Ranch Fall Art Show & Sale -- Lakewood Ranch Town Hall, 9 am - 4 pm.

Horsepower for Hope Auto Show -- Lakewood Ranch Main street, 10 am - 2 pm. Fundraiser event, tickets $10 at gate, $5 ahead at Walgreens. Muscle cars, European exotic cars, custom motorcycles.

Fiesta Italiana at Lakewood Ranch's Greenbrook Adventure Park -- Italian wine, coffee, food, pastries and ice. Craft vendors, kids activities, dog costume contest. Benefits LWR Humane Society. 11 am - 4 pm, free admission.

Venice Blues Festival -- Maxine Barritt Park, 11 am - 7 pm, tickets $25 - $50, bring lawn chairs.

Venice Area Orchid Society's Member Plant -- Centennial Park at the gazebo, starts at 9 am.

FL Maritime Museum's Boatyard Bash -- family fun, music, crafts, boats, demos. Free admission, bring lawn chairs. 2 - 8 pm. 4415 119th St W, Cortez.

Downtown Disco -- fundraising event by the Riverview High School Foundation. Dinner, dancing to disco tunes. Starts at 6 pm, The Francis at 1289 N. Palm Ave. $75/person. For tickets call 923-1484.

A Taste of Siesta Party on the Beach -- party on the beach illuminated by the contest sand sculptures, 6 - 10 pm. Full bar, live entertainment. Tickets $40/advance, others $59. Benefits the Mote Marine sea turtle research.

Family Run/Walk for Epilepsy -- Payne Park in Sarasota, 8:30 am - 11:30 am. Bounce house, food trucks, etc. Epilepsy Services of Southwest Florida

A Taste of Mixon's -- Mixon Fruit Farm in Bradenton is offering a food sampling tour through various food sampling stations in their shop for $5. 11 am - 3 pm.

Canine Christmas Festival & Adopt-A-Thon --- festival with doggie fun zone, canine fashion show, pet pics with Santa and adopt a new furry friend. Gourmet food trucks on site as well. Adults $3, under 12 get in free. Bishop SPCA Animal Shelter at 5718 21st Ave W, Bradenton from 10 am - 3 pm.

Saturday & Sunday

Sarasota Medieval Fair -- grab a turkey leg and a cup of ale, take in a jousting match. Sarasota Fairgrounds on Ringling, 10 am - 6 pm each day. Adults $16.95, Students/Seniors $14.95, 5-12 $8.95

Sarasota Outdoor Living Expo -- all the latest in outdoor furniture, lighting, grills, landscaping, etc. Downtown Sarasota at Main & Gulfstream, 10 am - 5 pm, free admission.

There are 2 other large events going on this weekend in the Tampa Bay area that are worth mentioning:

Rib Fest -- St. Pete's Vinoy Park. Featured band is Lynyrd Skynyrd. Fabulous event if you've never been. Gates open at 11 am each day, "ribbers" from all over the U.S. attend this event, family fun zone for the kids. Ribfest

Tampa International Auto Show -- at the Tampa Convention Center. Huge auto show. Friday 12 - 10 pm, Saturday 10 am - 10 pm & Sunday 10 am - 6 pm. Ticket and parking info at

Wed: Mannheim Steamroller Christmas -- performance at 8 pm.
