For those of you who will not be spending the weekend hitting the stores to finish your Christmas gift shopping, there are a number of fun holiday events going on in our area to attend:
Friday thru Sunday
Snowfest -- HUGE event, lots of SNOW to play in, build snowmen, throw snowballs. Also snow slides, reindeer rides, ice skating rink, large snow globe, Santa's Workshop and photos with Santa. Free admission, Payne Park in Sarasota, noon to 10 pm each day, suggested donation of $5 for parking.

Lights in Bloom -- Selby Gardens lights up the gardens for the holidays, 6 - 9 pm, adults $17, ages 6-11 $6 and members get in free.
Holiday Lights Spectacular -- Sarasota Jungle Gardens lights up the nights for the holidays as well, visit Candy Cane Lane and build s'mores with toasted marshmallows, plus regular bird and reptile shows. Adults $11, children 3-12 $6.
Victorian Christmas -- at the Crosley Estate, north Sarasota, tickets $15 - $25, more info call 722-3244.
Friday & Saturday
Bus tours of west Bradenton Christmas lights -- popular annual event, free but seats are limited, so on first come basis. Tour meets up at Building 29 of the State College of FL on 26th St W at 15th St W. Admission is a non perishable food item or unwrapped toy.
Bring Them Home for the Holidays Adoption Event -- give a cat or kitten a new home, Cat Depot at 2542 17th St in Sarasota is offering adoptions for $20/cat.
This event is in Tampa, but worth mentioning for model train fans -- Tampa Model Train Show at the FL State Fairgrounds, Sat 9 am - 5 pm, Sun 10 am - 4 pm, Adults $8, under 12 gets in free.
Saturday
Winter Solstice Celebration -- at the Ringling Art Museum courtyard, live entertainment, dancing, food & drinks can be purchased, 7 - 11 pm. $15/adult.
De Soto National Memorial Park hosts it's Winter Luminary Walk -- luminaries light up the walking trails 6 - 8 pm, live music, food & beverages for purchase, admission is free. Located off of 75th St W in NW Bradenton.
Sunday
Breakfast with Santa -- Breakfast buffet with Santa at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota, 9 - 11 am. Cookie decorating, photos with Santa, other activities. $59/adult, $39 children ages 3 - 12, under 3 get in free. Reservations are required, call 309-2000.
Come Ye Faithful Service of Carols -- 10 am, Roser Church at 512 Pine Ave, Anna Maria Island.
A Taste of Chanukah -- at the Sarasota Fairgrounds, 12 noon - 5 pm, free admission and parking. Wide range of events that include petting zoo, pony rides, snow slide, motorcycle daredevils in the Globe of Death, Snake & Bird show by Sarasota Jungle Gardens, kosher food by Michael's on East available for purchase, plus other vendors.
Polo season begins at Lakewood Ranch, open to the public, each Sunday thru the season. Gates open at 10 am, tailgating competitions, etc at the Polo Field at Lakewood Ranch. For info call 907-0000.
