Venice FL is a great choice for a host of reasons not to mention having a real downtown, a selection of 3 beaches within minutes of most neighborhoods, and less traffic congestion than some of the surrounding communities.

I will be heading out in the coming months to look at homes in Sarasota and Venice. Venice is sounding better. Can anyone tell me about medical facilities in Venice or do folks go to Sarasota.

I just had a home that had the back portion of the home in the flood area but the bank did not require them to get flood because the structure was not in the new noted flood area.

Sunshine, you might have to jump through a few hoops to get the home moved out of the new flood mapping but I believe it can be done after speaking with FEMA.
If you look at the new flood maps in North Port generated from the link on the county website (very easy to navigate, unlike the FEMA maps)-you will see in North Port, almost all of the flood zones are narrow strips along streets. Very few structures are in flood zones. The drainage is poor in many neighborhoods such as ours, but our house sits high enough that it is not affected during rainy season even though there is often standing water in the street.

We do not have mandatory flood insurance, even though a tiny portion of our large lot (say 20 feet) is within a flood zone now. The city of North Port has plans to redo our road as to increase drainage. We carry flood insurance anyway, and have not received any notice about a rate increase (currently 600 per year.

At one point the Venice hospital was owned by a corporation that had our current governor Rick Scott as CEO. Scott stepped down after the corporation HCA was charged with Medicare fraud. HCA ended up paying a total of $1.7 billion in criminal fines, penalties and damages. It was called the largest health care fraud case in US history at that time.

Venice Regional Medical Center was also featured in a 60 Minutes story a few years ago. Since then the parent corporation sold the hospital to another corporation that changed it's name to Venice Regional Bayfront Health and changes have been made.

There are web sites with ratings of various hospitals, here are a couple of links:

Venice Regional Bayfront Health - Venice, FL | Healthgrades.com

Venice Regional Bayfront Health - FL - Hospital Saftey Score
That one gave the Venice hospital a "C" score as of the fall of 2014.

Venice has a hospital which is mentioned in the post directly above. There are many doctors offices as well as imaging centers, labs, physical therapy facilities in Venice. Also Venice has a new Urgent Care center that was built within the past 2 years and it is operated by one of the big hospitals in Sarasota (Sarasota Memorial Hospital) . It is open 7 days a week from 8am-8pm. SMH.COM - SMH Opens Urgent Care & Health Center in Venice

Sarasota Memorial Hospital is approx 35-40 minutes north of Venice and there are a bunch of doctors offices and related medical facilities near there. This is a known to be a very good hospital.

Also there is Doctors Hospital in Sarasota which is directly off I-75 at Bee Ridge Road.

Also Englewood is the town south of Venice and there is a hospital there - plus related doctors offices and such.

The Sarasota Memorial Hospital system recently built a new free-standing 21 room emergency room facility in North Port. It is open 7/24.

This area tends to have more medical facilities than other cities of the same size. This is a direct result of having so many retirees in the area.

Actually, I would NOT put Stoneybrook at the top of any list, for a variety of reasons. Grand Palm in Venice has tons of amenities for kids including their own waterpark, with plans for a huge nature preserve.

As far as flood mapping, stay where you are in the Northeast or whether you are moving here, the new FEMA maps will get you in either location, so it's a wash. The scaremongers are in their own little bubble.

Rather pointless to include politics.

When the "politics" result in substantial fines for the parent corporation that owns a local hospital and those fines can have a financial impact on that hospital then I do not consider the information pointless.

Well it is pointless, since Venice Hospital over the years has received positive ratings and rankings in the state as well as nationally.

Hi there everyone.

Macrodome2 suggested to me in another thread to check out Venice. We love Naples, but are thinking it is to pricey for us. She stated she had looked in Naples also but choose Venice to live. She said Venice is great!

Have been reading threads on Venice and have not noticed much on condos if at all. We would really appreciate some suggestions on condos and areas. We will both be retired. We are not golfers so we do not have to live in a community with golf. It's not that we are opposed to a golf community, but we do not want to be forced into mandatory membership. We want to be in a safe area and not an age restricted community. Also being from the north we know nothing about flood zones and would appreciate info on that also. We are looking for a community that does not have ridiculous HOA fees.

Any suggestions, ideas and input we be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
