Recently moved into our home and within the first two weeks I am seeing these little black flies in one of our two bathrooms. No matter what time of day or night, I can go in and find one on the mirror or on the wall. I kill it and there's always another one not far behind to take it's place... I keep a clean bathroom and the windows are always closed so where are these little pests coming from? Our house was built in the sixties and the bath is a large 2 person walk-in shower. Anyone familiar with this problem? How do I get rid of them before I become lord of the flies? Is this common in FL bathrooms?

Sometimes winged black insects will be termites. Google image search termite and see if that's what they are. A pest control company can confirm it either way, and you'll likely want to get service for routine pest control anyhow.

Thank you for the responses. From what I've read about drain flies this is probably my answer. Now I have to work on a way to get rid of them!

Pour vinegar or bleach down the drain.

Welcome to Florida! I don't think that's a common occurrence, I haven't seen or heard of it. I'm sure you're upset, as I know I would be. "Drain flies" does make sense, since you only see them in the bathroom. I have a similar weird issue on my caged lanai, with bumblebees flying around the screen. I get them out and the next day, one or two more. Their species appears to be "bombus impatiens" and I have two impatiens plants, so I guess somehow they either got in on the flowers. Life in Florida, land of bugs and squiggly things! Hope it's a quick fix!

Blingding, is your house on septic? We had some backing up problems with septic and got those nasty bugs presumably up through the drains. I never researched because they gave me the creeps, but the name drain flies sounds appropriate.

hi tzais, the house was on septic about 10 years ago. Interestingly enough, it is the bathroom closest to where the old septic tank is located. I poured some bleach down the shower drain the other day and so far (fingers crossed) I haven't seen the flies since. I'm going to do it once a week for awhile and see if that does the trick. Thank you all for your responses!
