I hate it when busybodies try to ruin traditional holiday fun by calling the cops.
A very rational response, which happens to be my feelings exactly. All of my animals make their way out from behind/under the couch 30 minutes after the last boom. One can always sedate their animals or temporarily cage them as additional safety precautions.

There are some things we can not change, Fourth of July fireworks is one of them.

Yes, such a wonderful tradition......unless you, your child or your home suffers collateral damage.

Fireworks-Related Injuries to Children

Last year in my area an infant was severely burned when a firework a neighbor set off landed in her stroller on her front porch.

If a lit cigarette butt flung out of a passing car had landed in her stroller and burned her there would have been outrage......a firework, not so much....aww too bad.....accidents happen.

Private use of fireworks most certainly could and should be banned IMO.

I think in most urban, suburban communities private fireworks ARE banned...
It is just very difficult to enforce the law get people to stop using them...

Yep, I'd bet you're right. Just like using phones/texting is illegal when driving, but how many idiots do you see doing it and how many people have you heard of getting ticketed for it.

Ah, so this is where it starts with these so called patriots teaching their young ones civil disobedience. See kids, only some laws are made to be obeyed, you get to pick and choose which ones you want to follow according to your interpretation of what a real American should do. Talk about sending a double message to children. I hadn't considered it being banned in the area and if that's the case, if people were genuine in their need need to honor their country and feel so strongly seeing exploding objects accomplish this then instead of inconveniencing their neighbors, they shouldn't mind the little discomfort of joining the crowds once or two three times a year to leave their backyards to go publically show their patriotism and take the family, friends or just self to go watch the legal fire displays put on by their city or town's people.

Nope, not a big deal, every little step, no big deal in the face of the kids along the way sure, we blow everything out of proportion.

I think you can get a permit as an individual as long as there is a law enforcement representative present. I remember our neighborhood having fireworks in the street for New Years and there was a Sarasota Sheriff there. He happens to live on that street.

A neighborhood display maybe the HOA would cover the fee for law enforcement to be there
But the neighbor who bragged he would fire his fireworks is not paying for a deputy to be there
Totally different situation
And yours was unique since the LEO was a resident

This country was founded on "Civil Disobedience". Without it, we would be singing "God save the Queen" instead of celebrating our liberty with those pesky fire crackers. Just sayin'.

The dangerous (and irritating) kind that go boom are outlawed in Sarasota County. However in Charlotte County it's legal to buy the dangerous kind that go boom - but only if you sign a form (at the fireworks stand) that you intend to use them for agricultural purposes such as to scare off birds. However this "requirement" is more or less a sham - so everybody in Sarasota County that wants (the "good kind") of fireworks drives over to Charlotte County and signs that meaningless disclaimer form.
