I wanted to throw a question out there about education in the Sarasota County School system. My son goes to an elementary school in the system. We just relocated from another state. He was getting all A's in his previous school in the state we moved from. When he started at his new school here, he had school work and tests consisting of topics he hadn't yet been taught in his former school, the format is also different here. His grades now include C's and D's.

My son feels frustrated, does not like school now and has asked a few times if he could go to another school.

I have repeatedly requested for the teacher to help him go over some of the topics that he doesn't yet know. She ignores my requests for any school involvement but instead asked me to get some tutors for him, if we felt we needed to. She didn't go over with him tests he did do not well in. I went over those he did bring back so he could understand better. There are two adults teaching in his classroom daily, but none have sat with him.

I had also met with his teacher where she had me sign a parent teacher conference record that my child will be monitored with the same tools all other kids are using. So, nothing extra there. It is one thing to monitor his progress, but what is the point of monitoring, if the student is already starting to do badly in his work, and they don't even begin to address it? Does the student have to continuously fail before they would even provide some help? Would that not be too late?

I am not sure what the resources are at the county level, for someone I can reach out to.

Thank you for any help anyone can provide. I check my private messages regularly.

Not PM worthy but have you talked to the principle and/or guidance counselor?

I have found there are big differences from school to school in Sarasota County - a lot depends on the Principal and teachers. You can go to the school board to get something done - we did and they changed their tune really quick.

OMG...I just noticed that I misspelled principal! My elementary teachers would be very upset with me over that!

My daughter went to Sarasota Suncoast, a charter school k-5 on clark road, east of 75, we wish we never pulled her out but the commute was a long one 4x a day... we hate the school she goes to now, everything is Common Core, no teaching... Private school next year.
