We presently live in a very exclusive town North of Chicago which we aren't totally happy with.
We are a British family with kids aged 8 and 10.
We would expect to spend at least $1million on a home.
We would probably need private education.
We like the idea of a gated community as long as there are families
We would probably join a country club. The ones here cost around $100k + dues. But I don't want to join a country club here where my kids can only play outside 4 months of the year because of the ridiculously lengthy winters here...
I'm looking for a more relaxed outlook on life than the majority of people I come across have!
I've heard of Lakewood ranch which looks promising but where else should we look?

Come down and rent a home on a 6 month rental, and look around. We can tell you about the various neighborhoods, but you might want a canal property, waterfront, etc. So many of the PUds are Over-55. Besides, what appeals to one may not appeal to someone else.

I agree with the above but you might also discuss what you didn't like in IL and what you hope to find here. Relaxed is a given.

The Sarasota area has a variety of country club communities in the price range you indicated, mostly gated.

Here are a few of the more popular ones:

University Park Country Club (zip code 34201) -- social membership is required, tiered memberships available, a variety of neighborhoods within the master community to pick from.

Lakewood Ranch Country Club (34202) -- variety of neighborhoods ranging from upper $300's to over $1 mil. Country Club membership is not mandatory, tiered memberships. Highest tier (platinum) runs $38k initiation & around $570/mo.

Lakewood Ranch Country Club East (34202) -- variety of neighborhoods ranging upper $300's to over $1 mil. There is a residence club with amenities or you can also join the LWR Country Club.

Prestancia (34238) -- within master community Palmer Ranch. Palmer Ranch is very popular for location near beaches, school districts. The golf & country club is optional.

Also within Palmer Ranch -- Stoneybrook Golf & Country Club (34238).

Priced under the $1 mil mark but also within Palmer Ranch: Turtle Rock does not have a country club but great community as well. For new construction Sandhill Preserve has nice clubhouse with amenities. Somewhat older, Village Walk. (all 34238)

East of I-75 if you don't mind being farther from the beaches:

Founders Club (34240) Golf & country club is optional.

Laurel Oak (34240) Ditto.

Misty Creek (34241) Also optional.

Serenoa (34241) Tiered memberships.

I'm surrounded by 'Botox, braces and boobs'. Which I can handle - but only if done well lol.
People won't drink in public but will happily pop pills or drink vodka out of a coffee cup
People seem to take themselves far too seriously having 'made it' to one of the most exclusive zip codes in the US.
Sounds a bit harsh I know and of course not everyone is like that but it is a little boring when the main topic of conversation is about the remodelling of one's home and even worse - the two bars in the village are trying to kick you out at 10:30pm ... So even if the uptight ones do want to get loaded they can't l!
