I keep hearing people comment on not being able to find young people who know how to do their jobs properly or who are only interested in the paycheck and not the quality of their work. I've heard this comment from architects all the way to the man who serviced our septic tank a few weeks ago. Interesting in light of the turn this thread has taken. Maybe some food for thought for some.

If you don't mind I have a question or few for you. How did you end up here? Do you have family here? and what do you do for a living?

I traveled for work a bit and saw a few places I think I would enjoy more than sarasota. But in the end, as I age I prefer the heat to the cold. Good luck with your relocation. Stop by and let us know how it works out.
Answer:
My exwife moved here with my daughter, so she could be near here retired parents. I moved here and bought house down the street to raise my daughter. When daughter finishes school, I am out of here.
I am a physician.

Just as an FYI - and suspect some part of you already knows this - the beauty in Florida is on the water - not on the land. It took me years of visiting (and hating) Florida to realize that most people never actually see Florida.

When I am sailing about in my little boat and the dolphins are jumping around me...and the Ospreys are overhead...and the sea breeze is kicking up, that's the Florida that has some merit.

I 100% agree with you that the vast commercialism and developments and highways are ugly...which is why we chose to live near DT so we can avoid even having to drive through most of that crap.

To those who spend time on the water Florida looks very different.

Yes, you are the exact type of person that would enjoy SW FL(people that enjoy boating)
My wife and I do not enjoy boating, we honestly just dont get it. Just like others dont get why anyone would want to run a marathon.
People are all different, this is what makes the workd interesting.

JJTT - I agree with some of what you said but I go to a gym in Venice and there are a mix of people there - I see some over 60 people in amazing shape, and they work hard at it - not everyone is old and fat boozing it up - what does amaze me is all the old people that are out eating and drinking every night? How can they drink when most of them are surely on numerous medications. I am over 50 and when I tell people that I am not on medication - they are amazed!

I, for one - just love the hot, humid weather - the beautiful flowers and trees that never die - the sparkling blue-green Gulf - I feel like I am in paradise. I hate the Fall up North where you witness everything dying and the depressing dark, damp Winter - I will never go back up North.

I live in a 4 season area and I must say it's no fun!! 26-18'' of snow, cold that makes even cold lovers second think about going out. Snow that turns into ice and can strain or break an ankle. Shoveling a car out just to have a plow come by and put most of the snow that has now turned into ice back on top of your car. Have fun digging you car out again... I like the seasons, but give me 75-95 degrees all year around and water sports and yes sweating all day everyday over cold and snow.... I love the hot weather and should be in Florida for good in 2 years...

I think once the novelty wears off...in say 2 or 3 years you'll be like..."is this it?"
Sarasota is a nice town, no doubt about it, but there really aren't many young professionals there. The young ppl that are there leave... Granted, there are a few, but it's not like you'll be hanging out with them at all the hot nightlife spots.

Sarasota is very much a retirement town....through and through. Yes, it's beautiful. Yes, the weather is nice, but the reality it the town is built around retirees and snowbirds.
Summer time is very quiet. Everything takes place in winter (festivals, city-wide entertainment, shows, performances, etc..) because *shocker... that's when all the snowbirds are in town. Summer time is DEAD with a capital D.

I go to Sarasota during the Summer to escape the hoards in Miami. Where I live there's constant traffic, people, crowds, noise.... Sarasota is like this little quiet village....and for that reason I like it, but I could not live there.

OK edit-- as an aside. Seems to me like a lot of people from up north are such drama queens... "omg, the shoveling of the snow!!! Oh my god! The Fall season is so depressing when everything DIES an awful and depressing death!!! Oh boo hoo...it's so cold my joints hurt! I want to live in paradise!"....when in actuality paradise is really just a narrow strip of land along the beach....the rest of the inland areas are ugly and full of strip malls, random housing developments and swamps.

Alright.. As much as I love reading this debate(which I totally understand people have different opinions!) I think the misunderstanding is, is that we are moving to Sarasota regardless. Deposit on an apartment, Already have a good job. I guess I should have been asking more specific questions for more specific answers rather than "I hate it here" or "I love it here". I understand people have various opinions, but we've already visited the area numerous times and love it. Also when I say we are very type A personalities, We thrive wherever we go. What I would prefer to hear about is, Where people our age hang out, What are some good gyms, Are there any good festivals, Are there any good things for young people to become involved with (Kayak Club, Cool fitness classes) etc etc.. I appreciate the negative posts as much as the positive but I'm looking more for the answers of people who are similar to us (Type A, Actually Positive, Go getters, Fun people) I mean, with all due respect. It's a small city! If you're having the bad or hard of a time it's really making me question the responder over the city itself. I understand environment is a huge factor in ones life, success, health. But it's not Alaska or boondocks Kentucky people. Come on, Seriously?..

Don't worry, you will love it here! There are plenty of people who are into the same things as you; when you get here you do a little digging. Lots of good Facebook, meetup type groups where you can find out where all the good stuff you are interested in is happening. You got a good job, you found a place, you have already solved the HUGE issues of anyone moving here. This place is pretty much a paradise and it is what you make it. There are people who won't be happy anywhere, but that is more about them than the actual place they are. For gym, I actually like the YMCA here, all kinds of great classes and all age groups represented. Lots of live music venues, people into all kinds of water sports, etc. No shortage of fun for sure.

Good luck and welcome!
