Sarasota is also getting a new Lucky Supermarket this year. Lots of organics.

This is an incredibly informative thread.

My opinions:

Detwiler's: has consistently been the freshest and cheapest source for seafood. Their produce, sometimes not so much but as someone else said: look, touch and smell.

Whole Foods: rip-off of everything except their sprouts (alfalfa, sunflower, etc.)

Trader Joe's: our go-to for exceptional quality store-brand everything (think Wegman's quality) like butter, canned goods, etc. Great prices too.

Aldi's: sometimes really great deals on food. Their dairy is great.

Walmart: great prices on cleaning products. Will only purchase produce/meat there if it was the last store remaining in the continental US.

Publix: One notch above Walmart for produce and meats. Never buy their seafood.

Costco: have been very impressed with their meats. Even their limited produce has been good.

Have never shopped at Sprouts but am very excited about its opening in April.

Now if only Wegman's would expand down here!

The Publix on Laurel is not Osprey - its Nokomis and it is not a re-model - the store is only a few years old

Actually there are two Publixs on Laurel--
One on 41 and Laurel (by the post office)--store underwent remodel a couple of years ago
One on Laurel east of 41 toward 75 in a newish strip center--has a McDonald's in front of the strip's lot and good Italian restaurant at the other end...

Default So where are we to buy our produce and meat?

Suggestions? If everybody is too expensive and of bad quality, any suggestions as to where to shop?

Go to google map, zero in on SRQ and type in "Aldi" in the search box. If you don't see it zoom out.

There is no ALDI in Sarasota. There are two in Bradenton/Manatee and one in Palmetto.

There's an ALDI in North Port in Sarasota county. It's pretty close to Venice. Another ALDI about 5 minutes east of there in Port Charlotte (Charlotte County). Both are on US 41.

I go to Save A Lot mostly in Sarasota. Good prices, few crowds, always boxes available to put the food in. They don't run out ever like the one in Bradenton did. I like a lot of their items. Trader Joes gets crowded, Aldi is non existent in Sarasota, Detwilers, overrated. Detwilers would be better if not for the giant crowds. You'd think people would get tired of that wouldn't you? But no they keep coming back like the lemmings they are day after day. Detwilers is a once in a GREAT while stop for me. Its too much a pain to go there esp the one on Cattleman.
