I understand Florida doctors are not required to have malpractice insurance. Does this effect the quality of doctors in FL and Venice in particular? Is it hard to find doctors in Venice that accept new medicare patients (I am not old enough for medicare, but my husband is).

Default Doctors

There are good and bad doctors wherever you live. Venice is no different. But due to the older population in Venice finding a doctor that accepts Medicare should not be difficult. Talk to your neighbors and friends and get recommendations. I use the MILLENNIUM PHYSICIAN GROUP in Venice and I am on Medicare.

Based on my experiences, I cannot stress enough to be your own advocate. Know your medical conditions or learn about them. I find that too many doctors here think that there expertise is the best advice and do not listen to the patient and there concerns or suggestions or dismisses them. Not sure if its because there are so many old people with the old school mentality that they just listen to what the doctor says and do not question them. I also find that the front offices' sometimes let things slip through the cracks and they are not thorough. But as someone suggested above, get recommendations or do your homework by researching the doctors you are interested. And yes there are good doctors in the area.

I doubt that being on Medicare has anything to do with it. I am under Medicare age and had a hard time getting a primary care doctor. There are fewer of them because specialists make more money and malpractice is less for primary care than many other doctors.

I was told that doctors actually like Medicare because they are paid promptly unlike non-Medicare insurance or actual patients who pay their own way (due to deductible). Medicare is required by law to pay promptly (I cannot remember how many days), it may be a little lower but it's fast. A friend long ago said her dad always liked getting the "quick nickel over the slow dime."
Medicare patients pay many doctors overhead and non-Medicare is their profit margin.

The best time to find a primary doctor is off-season. Once the snowbirds get here fuggeddaboutit.

Florida or Bust - I agree with your observations.

I also think you need to interview your Dr. to find the best ones - most of my "specialists" are in Sarasota - I just think the quality of Drs. is better in Sarasota and I want them affiliated with Sarasota Memorial because I like that hospital and would never go to Venice Hospital - now - don't get angry out there - this is just my opinion.

I agree with Nancy on the doctors and hospital. Our first drs. were located in Venice. We now go to drs. in Sarasota. Husband's cardiologist said to only go to Sarasota Memorial.

I chose a doctor with privileges in both hospitals, just to cover my bases. If for some reason I am taken to Venice Regional, I want a doctor of my choice that can treat me there. Her group is mainly affiliated with Sarasota Memorial, which is where I've had tests done and was referred to see a specialist.

I absolutely love my doctor who's located in Venice. His name is Dr Beasely and he's right as you go over the north bridge in Venice. He's a GP and I couldn't be happier with him.

My dads cardiologist is at Sarasota Memorial. He had a heart transplant at Tampa General about 20 years ago and has used Dr Cooper at least that long

The area has lower pay and that effects the quality of doctors relocating to the area. Some may be acceptable, but you aren't going to find the cream of the crop in the area. Larger cities pay more and offer more quality of life opportunities, so that is where the top doctors go.
