I thought about posting in the Miami forum, but most of the posters there are anti Florida in general, so I didn't expect anything positive. I occasionally see some bad vibes in this forum too, but not nearly as bad.

We love Miami - we just can't afford it and are considering a move to the West Coast. Since my wife is Polish, we thought about Sarasota given the large Polish community there. Also, we are having our first child soon, and I just don't want to raise a family in Dade or Broward. The West Coast seems more family oriented, laid-back and affordable, which is what we are looking for.
I'm from Miami and moved to Sarasota 3 years ago for similar reasons, cost of living. I would really do my research first before making the move. While I love Sarasota, it is very beautiful and the beach, well just one of the best I've ever been to, the cost of living here is really high. When I moved, I was looking at a $900 per month rent versus what I would have paid for the same exact type of place about $1300 minimum in Miami. Sounded like a very sweet deal to me. However, once my lease was up the following year my rent went up to $1200 from the $900. Jobs are very scarce from what I hear and what I have seen my son go through trying to get a job.

Recently they opened a Lowe's and from what I heard they had over 500 applicants. Not sure how accurate that is, just what I heard, but I would definately say do the research first, secure what your payments will be and secure a job before moving to Sarasota.

There is also not alot for teens to do, the mall, beach, movies and livingstons gets old after a while.

Also, cops are really on top of it all in Sarasota. They don't play games nor do they cut many breaks. In fact, they have been known to pull you over and give a ticket or two just for tossing a cigarette butt out the window.

Just some factors to consider. It is much nicer than living in Miami, very different too. People are generally nice, it is a much older population, and the drivers are far more courtious than those you'll find in Miami.

I lived in Miami for 12 years and Sarasota is much better. I wouldn't live in Miami anymore now it has changed so much!!! I don't even visit my friends much, make them come here.... but we are on our way out of Sarasota, to expensive and the economy is killing us, so on to the next adventure NE TN!!!

Frankly, I appreciate that. I was driving on the highway when someone threw their cigarette out the window, and it's came in my window, flew in my eye and melted my contact lens.
(the lens was destroyed, and had to be replaced)
It could have been worse: if their had been lots of traffic and I had been unable to pull to the side of the road.
