Hello all,

I’ll be moving with my family from our house in New York to a new home in Sarasota in the middle of June and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations or advice about choosing a moving company. We’re leaving just about all of our furniture behind – most of the things moved will be boxes (lots of boxes). I was looking for some recommendations or practical advice about what to look for or what to expect from movers. Thanks in advance for any advice…

Joe

if it's mainly boxes, i'd recommend pods. load them yourself and when ready they will pick up and deliver.

I moved from CA to ME last year bringing only boxed items, no furniture.

U-Pack/ABF had a better reputation then than the other pod companies, and I had great results with them.

We moved from NJ to here in 2015 and I used https://www.princetonmoving.com/
Not sure if they will be convenient since you're in NYC but wouldn't hurt to call. They were family of a friend and did a great job. No damages and the driver/unloaders were very professional

Regardless of franchise, look at the reputation of your local moving and storage company. They will will be the personnel who ultimately decide as to your satisfaction with the move. Any major moving company is only as good as the people who pick up your household. What I mean is a Mayflower franchise (for example) in Albany may be great. But a Mayflower franchise in Syracuse may be terrible. So do your homework locally to see which company is the best. Good luck with your move.

U-Pack will deliver your cube(s) and give you a few days to load it. If you don't have a delivery destination yet, they can store the cube(s) for a monthly fee. When you're ready to have it delivered, they will truck it to your new destination and will deliver to your new home.

My husband and I moved from Florida to Illinois and then 8 months later back to Florida. On the way up we rented a Penske truck for about $500 and then on the way back we rented a Uhaul for just about $1000. The Penske was a big box truck and the Uhaul was just a trailer on the back of our Jeep. My suggestion is, price out a couple different companies and have them "compete" with each other for lower prices! Are you looking for transportation only or full service as in packing, moving, and unloading as well?

When my husband and I moved in 2003 from NJ to Atlanta we hired a moving company, forgot the name but it was like a 40' size truck. They loaded the truck and unloaded it too. A few years later we moved to SWFL we tried to move as light as possible, but ended up with a Uhaul about 20' and drove ourselves. You should contact some local trucking companies and get some estimates. If you know you need to store it, the pod might be the way to go, as they can store them, but also charge for it. One suggestions, try to pack as light as possible, I only use half of what I did before. I feel live is different, very uncomplicated in Florida. ;-)
