We are currently staying in Englewood while looking for a home in the Englewood, Venice area.

I've been looking into some communities with HOAs as it would be nice to be in a community that has amenities and lawn maintenance and activities. But I also would want to be able to have family come and visit. But many seem to have restrictions on regular automobiles being in driveways or being parked in driveways overnight. And restrict number of days that you can have overnight guests use parking area.

Does anyone have information, suggestions, pros and cons that you could share of the communities in these and surrounding areas?

There are plenty of communities that have lenient HOAs where you are not subject to all their restrictions - you can be free and not feel like you are under the thumb of the draconian HOA. Ask a realtor

Yes, ask a realtor but a realtor can't know every detail about every association. When you start to narrow down you'll want to read it all yourself, before buying into a place with things you would really dislike.

I drove into mine many times before buying. Besides the by-laws and whatnot, I wanted to know if the board acts like Nazis. I have no problem following rules, but I had lived in a place that just harrassed people, and I want no part of that ever again.

LOUD BANGING AT 7:Am. Um, yes? Can I help you. 'You're welcome mat is two inches too far to the left'.

Me: slams door. Saying 'omg' to self over and over.

Here, a polite note is sent regarding an infraction, giving x amount of time to rectify it. And it's a warning, no fine attached for a first time offense. Heck, even a 4th time, depending on what it is. They are not out searching for reasons constantly to fine people to boost revenue. SOME PLACES ARE. YOU DON'T WANT A PLACE LIKE THAT.

Not knowing what your budget is or what you're looking for in a house I will say I live in the Jockey Club in North Port and like it. The rules are not overly restrictive and the dues are only $240 a year. And that includes a nice clubhouse with a large heated pool. But it's an older subdivision and the houses (mostly 3bed/2bath) run between $125k-$200k.

Oyster Creek allows cars overnight in driveway. It is a gated community but the HOAs are only 180/mo. Has the standard clubhouse, pool tennis courts, bocce. It is built around a golf course that is owned by a separate entity. So most homes have nice golf course views but there is no obligation to join the course. It is is in Campbell County side of Englewood so taxes are lower.

IslandWalk has full landscaping included. Cars are allowed on the driveway overnight, but not on the street overnight. There’s lots of parking at the clubhouse buildings to park a visitors car if it comes to that.
