Does anyone have information on what hotels have backup power in the event of a tropical storm in Sarasota-Manatee counties? In particular, can anyone identify the hotel they stayed during Irma and if backup power was utilized, and if so, what was their experience? I inquired with AAA here in Sarasota and I was told no such information existed with AAA.

If they do have it, won't there be huge yellow/gold CAT generators on their property like behind some grocery stores? I'd think it would be easy to spot.

I just thought of another idea. Hospital's are placed upon the highest priority circuits on the grid. Those circuits are most robust, and if they do go out, they get special emergency status. If you can find a hotel right next to, or vey close to a Hospital, the odds are in your favor for that hotel to not lose power.

First time I noticed this was during a major ice storm in Atlanta. We lived ~1 mile from a major Hospital, and our power held out much longer than others we knew across the ATL metro. When we finally lost power, we made it to a Hotel next to the Northeast Hospital, and voila! Power througout the rest of the outage. We hung out in the lobby with Hundreds of other locals, and some worked for the power company and they told us why this hotel had power...same circuit as the Hospital. They knew this, and that is why they went there after the power failed at their homes.

There are usually hotels near hospitals for family members who have ill kin.

That should be your ticket to the most reliable power around...unless you have a generator and lots of gas to power it.

One of the couple we bought our house from worked for FLP--fairly significant job from what our daughter said--they lived next door to the guys before we bought it--
Mike always told her if they lost power it would come back quickly because of his job...
And we didn't lose power in Irma--our daughter's house had power--
The house to the right of ours was out for over a week and the two others to the end of the block--

In TX we have rarely had power outages--mainly because I think we have a fire station just down the block from our neighborhood--on same side of the street...newer neighborhood though, underground utilities once into the subdivision...
