SARASOTA (WWSB) - Police are looking for a man armed with a handgun who stole a woman’s purse while at Publix in Sarasota.

It happened around 10:30am in the parking lot of the Publix on South Osprey Avenue. Police say a man described as between 5′10″ and 6′ tall wearing a dark hoodie and dark pants robbed the victim at gunpoint and stole her purse.

The man fled in a dark sedan that was possibly a Toyota.
The victim was not hurt."

I picked up lunch at Publix on my way to work on Siesta Key & overheard the conversation regarding the above. Police asked for security tapes & there were none. This situation just reminded me to make sure my concealed carry permit is up to date.

I'm amazed that Publix doesn't have security video in the parking lot. Most large stores do, I would think. I get panhandlers all the time in the parking lots around here (SE Michigan), but not armed robbery, yet. That would be a very frightening experience for anyone who is simply walking to their car in a grocery store parking lot. Hope the woman is ok.

Here's a list of unsolved crimes in the SRQ area:

I am really surprised at this - it happened in the daytime - I am going to have to start carrying

- Why the heck do then not have cameras?

Worse yet, read some of the unsolved crimes in the link in my last post. Scary. Broad daylight armed robbery of couple in the parking lot of their condo complex.

And yes, all of these places need security cameras focused on the parking lots.

What are you going to do, shoot him in the back as he runs away? Odds are you wouldn't see his gun until it's already pointed at you. You're more likely to shoot someone in Publix when it falls out of your bag.
