The problem occurs when the red light cameras are owned by private companies, and the local government gets a piece of the action. I heard that a private company owned the red light cameras in the Washington DC area, and the government got a piece of the action. The private company wanted to increase their profit, so they were able to shorten the yellow time. That increased the profits and increased the accidents. But the private company that owned the red light cameras were only concerned with increasing their profits, not reducing the accidents.

For a short time, red light cameras were legal in Minnesota, but they were struck down by the court system in Minnesota. I don’t recall the legal argument that was used successfully to eliminate the red light cameras from Minnesota. The people fined by the red light cameras were refunded their fines, but only if they knew that they could apply for the refunds. Out of state people, or uninformed people in Minnesota wouldn’t receive refunds, which I thought was a rip off. The government should have at least made an attempt to track down those people, and refund the fines.

So, there might be legal recourse to eliminate the red light cameras from Florida, by following the legal method to eliminate the red light cameras from Minnesota. I don’t know if that would work to eliminate the red light cameras from Florida. I think red light cameras are a bad idea, and I hate to see them.

They are an invasion of privacy. They can peer right into your car. I think that is how other States are using the law to get rid of them.

Lockheed Martin.........

I can assure all that LM has many execs. and sales people with yachts and beach houses. I know this personally. Yet their systems will put the poor into big trouble and way behind on their bills.

Do you think they care? Well, they do not.

Former Democrat Governor Charlie Crist is the reason we have camera's peering into our cars at nearly every intersection around here.

https://www.tripsavvy.com/florida-re...ameras-1513690

The private companies that run these systems will ask the DOT to shorten the yellow light duration to increase the number of tickets that get issued. That's entrapment.

Texas's Republican Governor just past a law to deem traffic camera's illegal in Texas. His action was based upon private company's involvement in policing & gathering evidence against citizens.

In Georgia, these camera's are now also on school busses to catch drivers who don't stop. It was shocking to see some of the video's that were released to the local tv stations to show on the nightly news. I had no idea how many people would fail to stop for school busses and drive right on by them like they are not stopped...what morons. I still say no to camera's.

Patrol car camera's are also used in Georgia that are called license plate readers that record tag #'s, email them to a central computer to see if any unpaid tickets, failure to appear, stolen vehicle report, outstanding warrants, ect. are tied to the cars owner. There have been many false arrests made by law enforcement of people driving the car who did not own the car, but borrowed it from a friend, or relative, or employer who had no idea the owner was in violation of any laws.

I used to see patrol cars driving through shopping center parking lots with the camera aimed at every car as it drove up and down each aisle at the Mall scanning every tag. I started backing into every parking spot, and still do that most of the time. Not that I have anything to hide, its just my way of protesting that the police state has gone to far. Besides, backing in is safer than backing out sometimes.

There is no expectation of privacy in a motor vehicle on a public road.

Really does not seem right to blame Crist on this. Yes he signed the bill, but he did not write it or pass it in the house or senate. The vote totals also show they would have easily over-riden any veto.

I can assure you with these kind of totals, there were yeas from both sides of the aisle.

Just trying to be fair here, as people always try to blame one party for everything that goes wrong to try and fit a narrative. When in most cases it is both parties fault.

04/23/10 HOUSE Read Third Time; Amendment Adopted (387985); Passed (Vote: 77 Yeas / 33 Nays)

04/27/10 SENATE Read Third Time; Passed (Vote: 30 Yeas / 7 Nays)

It's not a secret - right out in the open that in FL state gov. you get whatever you pay for. Ask all the political reporters up there - that's simply the way it works.

But I have a hard time imagining that localities are being forced to install X numbers of them or that they couldn't vote or pressure the State to allow them various waivers.

I don't like the idea of me having to chance getting real ended and weigh that against $200 tickets all in a split second. I'd like to see true data on how many standard Red light runners (say within an extra second) cause an accident. I would think about zero because the other traffic lanes take longer than that to get going and to be in the intersection.

If it's not broke don't fix it. The same cameras could send a ticket to every single car doing 5MPH over the speed limit...and points!

It's a scam....they would never allow it up here. Freedom
"So far all photo (such as red light and speed camera) enforcement is still illegal in Massachusetts."

I expect privacy everywhere I live and go. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.

I don't think there is an expectation of privacy on any public road, street or sidewalk, right?
