The state will bring 3,500 COVID-19 vaccine doses to a senior mobile home park in Ellenton. But you don’t have to live there to get a shot.

“We are thrilled to help bring the vaccine to Colony Cove residents, as well other residents,” said Scott Payrits, the park’s general manager. “I think its a great way to get them vaccinated, especially so close.”

The site will be open for any resident 65 years old or over but an appointment is needed. Appointments are being made via the mobile home park’s homeowners association. Florida teachers, police officers and firefighters 50 and over will be next in line to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, according to Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“I’ll be signing an executive order later today to expand vaccine eligibility to all sworn law enforcement officers age 50 and above, all firefighters age 50 and above, and all K-12 school personnel age 50 and above,” DeSantis said at a news conference Monday.

The governor did not go into further detail about how vaccinations for those groups will be handled, or when they can start receiving their first doses. He did not take any questions from reporters.

DeSantis said Monday that 175,000 doses of the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine could arrive in Florida this week. The doses would enough to cover all teachers, firefighters and police officers over 50 statewide.
UPDATE:

School employees, police and firefighters over 50 will go to state and federal vaccination sites

https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/...es/6890725002/

State and federal vaccine sites on Wednesday will start vaccinating teachers, firefighters and police older than 50, according to Samantha Bequer with the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

The vaccinations begin two days after Gov. Ron DeSantis opened the list of those who qualify for the COVID-19 vaccine to include the new categories.

DeSantis signed an executive order Monday that added K-12 school employees, firefighters and sworn law enforcement officers over 50 to a list that already included people living in nursing homes and people over 65.

The governor’s office later confirmed that the order applies to anyone who works for a public or private school, according to the Palm Beach Post. The list includes teachers' aides, bus drivers, janitors, cafeteria workers, guidance counselors and school psychologists.

To get a spot in line, anyone who meets the new criteria needs to call a designated line to schedule the appointment or preregister in the state’s online system.

The number for those living in Sarasota County is 866-201-7110. In Manatee County the number is 866-201-5412. The website to preregister is:

https://myvaccine.fl.gov/

As for when residents who now qualify for the vaccine can be vaccinated at locally run sites, that is still unclear. A spokeswoman from Sarasota said the county should have guidelines later in the week.

The state and federal sites operate separately from those run by the local county health departments. Publix and other pharmacies that offer the vaccine also qualify.

Sarasota and Manatee county vaccine clinics are run by local Florida Department of Health staff and are scheduled through each county’s registration systems.

State-run sites, most often pop-up clinics, are operated by state staff and the National Guard. They do sometimes use a county’s registration system to set appointments.

Covid-19 Live Updates: Biden Says Vaccine Doses Could Be Available for All Adult Americans by End of May

https://news.google.com/articles/CAI...S&ceid=US%3Aen

Merck will help manufacture the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The governor of Texas says the state can reopen fully next week despite C.D.C. warnings to governors against easing restrictions yet.

Here’s what you need to know:

- Biden says there will be enough vaccine available for all adults by the end of May, as Johnson & Johnson makes a deal to boost supply.

- A variant in Brazil infected many who had already recovered from Covid-19.

- Health care workers across the world faced violence as the pandemic raged.

- New York City is ramping up testing for variants as the vaccine rollout continues.

- Can’t get a Covid vaccine? In this county, everybody is eligible.

- Czech Republic struggles to tamp down the virus’s spread as its death toll rises.

- U.S. Catholic bishops have drawn a subtle moral distinction between vaccines.

Florida opens the door for all teachers and school staff to get COVID-19 vaccine

https://www.bradenton.com/news/state...249688498.html

All teachers and school staff, as well as daycare and preschool workers, can now get the COVID-19 vaccine in Florida.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the change Thursday at a vaccination site in Crystal River on the state’s west coast to comply with a new mandate from the Biden administration that was released earlier this week. The federal mandate directs states to vaccinate all pre-K-12 teachers, staff and childcare workers, with the goal of having them receive at least one shot by the end of March.

None of the South Florida school districts are requiring employees to get the vaccine, though they are encouraging it.

DeSantis’ change of heart comes a day after CVS Health brushed aside DeSantis’ executive order, which restricted vaccinations to K-12 school personnel 50 and older and excluded preschool and daycare employees. CVS says it was complying with the federal directive over DeSantis’ more restrictive original order.

CVS Health owns Navarro Discount Pharmacies, CVS y mas and traditional CVS stores. All Navarro and CVS y mas stores in Miami-Dade are offering vaccines. Some traditional CVS stores across the state, including in South Florida, also offer vaccines.

Other pharmacies including Publix, Winn-Dixie, Fresco y Mas, Walmart, Walgreens and Sam’s Club are expected to also begin offering vaccinations to teachers and school staff. That’s because they are part of the federal retail pharmacy program.

Starting with appointments made during Friday’s scheduling opportunity, all Florida K-12 and child care teachers and personnel will be eligible to make an appointment at a Publix Pharmacy. The online reservation system will open Friday, March 5 at 7 a.m. ET, and eligible individuals will be able to schedule appointments for Monday, March 8 and Tuesday, March 9.

As of now, there is a CVS offering the COVID-19 vaccine in Bradenton, but all appointments are booked. Once available, you must register online for an appointment.

Walgreens:
Currently, no Walgreens are offering the COVID-19 vaccine locally. When that changes, you can register online.

Walmart:
There are currently NO WALMARTS IN EITHER MANATEE OR SARASOTA COUNTY that are offering the COVID-19 vaccine.

To get a vaccine at Walmart, should they become available, you must create an account and apply online.

Winn-Dixie:
To determine stores in your area, you must use the site’s vaccine locator online.

The Florida Department of Health is also keeping an updated list of pharmacies and vaccine locations that will be updated daily.

The four federally supported vaccination sites that opened in Florida Wednesday, including one at Miami Dade College’s north campus and another at the Tampa Greyhound Track, will soon begin offering vaccinations to all teachers and school staff, regardless of age.

College and university professors in Florida are still excluded unless they are 65 and older or are deemed by a physician to have a high risk medical condition that makes them “extremely vulnerable” to COVID-19.

Florida releases form for ‘extremely vulnerable’ to qualify for COVID-19 vaccine

https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/...ne/6902318002/

The state of Florida has put out the form that will pave the way for people deemed “extremely vulnerable” to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

The single-page form allows doctors to certify that a patient is at high risk for developing complications from COVID-19.

The form became effective beginning March 3rd, the same day a new crop of people qualify for the vaccine.

The new rules allow doctors, pharmacists and advanced practice registered nurses to vaccinate people deemed medically vulnerable by a physician.

A state spokeswoman said Tuesday, however, that any newly eligible individuals would be able to get the vaccine at state or federal sites. This would include pharmacies, such as Publix, who receive vaccine allocations through state or federal programs.

It is unclear, though, when those who are medically vulnerable or who fit under the new criteria will be able to go to a county-run Florida Department of Health vaccine clinic.

Locally, officials with Sarasota and Manatee Counties have said that they are waiting for state guidelines to set up procedures.

The medically vulnerable form can be found here:

The short-term, middle-term, and long-term future of the coronavirus

https://www.statnews.com/2021/03/04/...e-coronavirus/

When experts envision the future of the coronavirus, many predict that it will become a seasonal pathogen that won’t be much more than a nuisance for most of us who have been vaccinated or previously exposed to it.

But how long that process takes — and how much damage the virus inflicts in the interim — is still anyone’s guess.

“The most predictable thing about this coronavirus is its unpredictability,” said Howard Markel, a historian of medicine at the University of Michigan, who has studied other pandemics.

Manatee COVID vaccinations accelerating. 9,600 more seniors will get shots next week

https://www.bradenton.com/news/coron...249700363.html

Manatee County and the state of Florida plan to administer COVID-19 vaccines to 9,600 more seniors next week.

A boost in vaccine supplies and a second, state-supported vaccination site are set to help speed up the process of immunizing the thousands of people still waiting for a shot.

Starting Thursday, a total of 4,500 seniors will begin receiving calls for appointments at the county’s Public Safety Center, 2101 47th Terrace E., Bradenton, where the new vaccination site operated by the Florida Department of Emergency Management is set to open on Monday. And 5,100 additional seniors will start receiving calls early next week for appointments at the county’s drive-thru vaccination site at Tom Bennett Park, 280 Kay Road, Bradenton.

For both sites, patients will continue to be randomly selected from the county’s vaccine standby pool. Seniors should continue to look for a call from 941-742-4300, as well as a text message or email with instructions on how to accept or decline the appointment.

If an appointment is not accepted within two hours, the person will be placed back in the standby pool, according to the county.

Sarasota theater prepares to welcome back audiences 1 year after going dark

https://www.fox13news.com/news/saras...going-dark.amp

SARASOTA, Fla. - One year ago, theaters throughout Sarasota and around the world went dark.

"When it got taken away there was a deafening silence, not just of the theaters themselves but for all the surrounding businesses," said Rebecca Hopkins, managing director of Florida Studio Theater.

The theatre doors will reopen at the end of the month.

"The theater, the arts as a whole, this is a cultural community. It drives a lot of our economy. It’s the reason why a lot of people move here. There’s a lot of employment here but it’s what makes the town so special," said Hopkins.

Guests will notice changes from the moment they arrive. Temperatures will be checked, social distancing observed and masks required. The theater will reopen with about a 30% capacity. Seats have been blocked off to maintain social distancing. Special filters have also been installed on all a/c units.

"It is so exciting to finally reopen it’s also nerve-wracking because we want to do it well," said Hopkins.
