With hospitalizations now declining and with the lag between deaths and hospitalizations - it's looking like deaths (for our local area) will peak for this Delta wave near the end of September.
White House reports shows Sarasota and Manatee counties have 1,875 COVID-19 deaths combined since pandemic started
https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/...ee/8346034002/
Sarasota and Manatee counties had 1,875 combined COVID-19 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to a new White House report.
The Florida Department of Health stopped releasing county-level death data to the public in early June. At that time, Sarasota County had 844 COVID-19 deaths and Manatee County had 689 for a combined 1,533.
The Community Profile Report, which is compiled by the White House COVID-19 Team and lists cumulative deaths by county through Sunday, tallies 1,051 deaths in Sarasota and 824 in Manatee.
That means another 342 people have died of the disease in the two-county region since early June, a death tally that has accelerated from a surge in hospitalizations that just now is starting to taper off. There were 72 deaths in the two counties last week alone, according to the report.
The peak in deaths lags the peak in hospitalizations as people linger in the intensive care unit for days or weeks.
Many of the local deaths have been at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton.
Sarasota Memorial reported nine more COVID-19 deaths Wednesday and eight Tuesday, continuing a grim September.
The hospital had 99 COVID-19 deaths in August and already has 83 in September, halfway through the month. A total of 434 people have died of COVID-19 at Sarasota Memorial since the pandemic began.
Manatee Memorial reported four more COVID-19 deaths Tuesday and 133 since June 1.

Volunteers sought for study of pill to prevent COVID-19 in people exposed to virus
https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/med...rus/ar-AAOtRB6
Researchers in Bradenton are seeking volunteers for a clinical trial to evaluate a pill to prevent COVID-19 in people who don't have the virus, but have been exposed to it.
The ideal candidate is one who lives in the same residence with someone who has the virus. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, have not had COVID-19, have no symptoms of the disease, and have a healthy immune system.
Volunteers must have had exposure to the virus no more than 72 hours before entering the study.
To date, Manatee County has recorded more than 60,000 COVID-19 cases, and more than 800 deaths.
Some of those in the Merck study will receive a 200 milligram pill, while others will receive a placebo that looks identical but has no medicinal properties.
Participants won't know whether they are receiving the Molnupiravir (MK-4482) pill or a placebo in the multi-center, randomized double-blind study.
Merck is recruiting volunteers in at least 32 communities across the United States for the study, Bradenton being one of them.
Participants will take a pill twice a day for five days, said Dr. Stephen Weston of Synergy Healthcare of Bradenton.
Synergy would be in close contact with participants during the study to learn whether they are experiencing any adverse symptoms, and to help guide them in seeking appropriate medical care if necessary, Weston said.
Social distancing and quarantining, if possible, during the study are recommended as some participants will received the placebo and have no protection against the virus, Weston said.
The pill has the advantage of being taken orally rather than intravenously like some other treatments, Weston said.
To enroll in the study, visit
https://merckcovidresearch.com/move-ahead/ or call Synergy Healthcare at 941-896-4948.
Synergy will take a brief clinical history from volunteers over the phone, and then invite those who seem to meet the requirements for the study to their office to collect more detailed information, Weston said.
For more information about the study, visit
https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/...&draw=2&rank=3 .

"FLORIDA with record reporting of deaths in a single day
1,554
Total is now 50,811 (2366/million)
Temporarily moves Florida into #11 spot in nation for total deaths (since the pandemic began).
New records (and will still update further as more data comes in) for Florida:
August 20: 369 ACTUAL deaths in a single day from COVID.
August 24: 335 highest rolling average daily deaths.
Florida remains on track to EXCEED 55K deaths."
-------------------------------------------------------
Florida COVID update: State breaks 50,000 total deaths, 1,554 more added to toll
https://www.bradenton.com/news/coron...254271183.html
Florida’s total number of COVID deaths broke 50,000 on Thursday and the seven-day average for number of new deaths was the second highest since the pandemic began, a grim milestone caused by the surge of new cases spawned by the virulent delta variant beginning in August.
Florida reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1,554 additional deaths and 9,760 more COVID-19 cases, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data. In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,473,873 confirmed COVID cases and 50,811 deaths.
All but 112 of the newly reported deaths — about 93% — occurred since Aug. 19, according to the Herald analysis. About 59% of the newly reported died in the past two weeks, the analysis showed.
Florida led the nation in the daily average of new COVID deaths per day over the past seven days, at 325.7, the New York Times reported Thursday. On a per capita basis, Florida also ranked No. 1, with a rate of 1.52 deaths per 100,000 residents over the past seven days, the Times reported.
According to Herald calculations of CDC data, in the past seven days, on average, the state has added 363 deaths and 11,816 cases each day. This is Florida’s second highest seven-day death average when tallying deaths by report date. The highest occurred on Sept. 4, with a seven-day average of 373 deaths.

The legal debate is centered around if a tenant is regarded in the same vein as a "customer" or "patron" in Florida's vaccine passport law.
Florida landlord says tenants must get COVID-19 vaccine or move out
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/fl...out/ar-AAO7EJX
If you’re not vaccinated for COVID-19, you can forget about moving into any of eight apartment complexes in Broward and Miami-Dade counties owned by Santiago A. Alvarez and his family.
And if you’re still unvaccinated when it comes time to renew your lease, you’ll have to find someplace else to live.
Alvarez, who controls 1,200 units in the two counties, is the first large-scale landlord known to national housing experts to impose a vaccine requirement not only for employees, but also for tenants. They’ll be required to produce documentation that they’ve received at least an initial vaccine dose.
The policy, which took effect Aug. 15, could set Alvarez’s company on a collision course with Gov. Ron DeSantis’ vaccine passport ban, which prohibits businesses from requiring that customers be vaccinated.

AARP Report: 237 Florida Nursing Home Residents Died From COVID During 4-Week Period
https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/med...iod/ar-AAOtNXT
As the delta variant of the coronavirus caused Florida to become a hotspot for COVID-19 in late July and August, the state’s nursing homes also felt the brunt.
Using federal data, the senior-advocacy group AARP released a report Wednesday that said 237 Florida nursing-home residents died of COVID-19 during a four-week period that ended Aug. 22 — tied for the highest death rate in the nation.
The report released Wednesday showed that Florida during the four weeks that ended Aug. 22 had a COVID-19 death rate for nursing-home residents — 0.36 per 100 residents — that was tied with Alaska for the highest in the nation. The report also said 13 Florida nursing-home staff members died of COVID-19 during the period.
Florida also had among the lowest rates in the nation of fully vaccinated nursing-home workers and residents during the period. The report said 48.5 percent of nursing-home staff members were fully vaccinated, with only Louisiana lower at 47.9 percent. It said 73.6 percent of Florida nursing-home residents were fully vaccinated, with only Nevada and Arizona having lower rates.
The Biden administration in August announced that it will require nursing homes that participate in the Medicaid and Medicare programs to have fully vaccinated staffs. The White House last week expanded the vaccination mandate to other types of health-care facilities, such as hospitals.

Sun Sentinel and other media seek to join fight against state to release COVID information
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/su...ion/ar-AAOwkqY
The South Florida Sun Sentinel, along with other news organizations and the First Amendment Foundation, is looking to join a lawsuit that seeks to force Florida to provide detailed, daily updates about the surge in COVID cases in the Sunshine State.
Florida state Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, D-Orlando, filed the lawsuit last month, arguing that the state’s failure to provide the information violates public records law. The coalition of media organizations intervening in the lawsuit include the Orlando Sentinel, The Miami Herald and its parent company McClatchy, Gannett (which owns USA Today and The Palm Beach Post), The New York Times Company and The Washington Post.

Federal judge declines to block Florida ban on mask mandates
https://www.wfla.com/news/politics/f...mask-mandates/
A federal judge declined Wednesday to block a ban imposed by Gov. Ron DeSantis to prevent mandating masks for Florida school students amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
Judge K. Michael Moore in Miami denied a request by parents of disabled children for a preliminary injunction against an executive order that DeSantis issued in July that served as the basis for the Florida Department of Health issuing a rule that required school districts to allow parents to opt out of any student mask mandates.
Moore wrote in his ruling that parents should have pursued administrative claims before filing a lawsuit.

DeSantis says Biden administration is hurting Florida by ‘seizing control’ of COVID treatments
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/de...nts/ar-AAOwyRo
Gov. Ron DeSantis lambasted the federal government’s decision to control the distribution of monoclonal antibody treatments for COVID-19, replacing the system under which a small number of states — including Florida — were gobbling up large shares of the supply.
DeSantis said the Biden administration has slashed in half the state’s supply of monoclonal antibody treatments that have been critical in reducing deaths and hospitalizations from COVID-19.
“This is a dramatic reduction,” DeSantis said Thursday at a Fort Lauderdale press conference with healthcare providers. “We are facing a massive cut in antibody treatments. Abruptly.”

Florida fights to block deposition of its own surgeon general in school mask legal battle
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime...tle/ar-AAOwtZG
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Attorneys for the Florida Department of Health, school boards and parties such as the NAACP battled Thursday about whether state Surgeon General Scott Rivkees should give a deposition in a legal fight over Florida’s efforts to prevent school mask mandates.
Administrative Law Judge Brian Newman held a nearly hourlong hearing as the department seeks a protective order to block Rivkees from having to testify in challenges to an Aug. 6 rule issued by the health agency. The rule required that parents be able to “opt out” their children from any school mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic.
