The FDA advisory panel took a second vote about Pfizer Covid-19 boosters and voted to recommend boosters for people 65 and over - and for people at high risk for severe Covid.

https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status...63127911993345

"Now a unanimous vote in favor of 65 and older and people at high-risk for severe covid (which gives room for interpretation). OK, that's progress. Thumbs up

A very good outcome for this FDA Advisory Committee following what data are available with regard to age, and recognizing the need for high-risk individuals, due to co-existing conditions or occupational exposures, such as the heathcare workforce, essential workers, and teachers."

The FDOH released it's county level Covid-19 case report this evening. The downtrend for Sarasota and Manatee Counties remains firmly in place and there are currently no indicators suggesting that the downtrend will stall anytime soon.

The FDOH stats for the week of Sept. 10 - Sept.16:

http://ww11.doh.state.fl.us/comm/_pa...ata_latest.pdf

Sarasota County

Cases: 1433 (33% decline from the preceding week's case total of 2142)

Test Positivity Ratio: 11.0% (3.2% decline from the previous week's test positivity ratio of 14.2%)

Manatee County

Cases: 1528 (37.9% decline from the previous week's case total of 2462)

Test Positivity Ratio: 12.8% (3.1% decline from the previous week's test positivity ratio of 15.9%)

Just to be clear - currently Florida Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations are in a strong downtrend - while deaths (a lagging indicator) are very near the reporting peak for this delta wave. The magnitude of the deaths now being reported go back several weeks and are an indication of how bad this delta wave actually was.

Florida Update On Covid-19 Deaths

https://twitter.com/thehowie/status/1439227578397696000

"Based on yesterday's report from the FDOH, Florida is now #10 in deaths per capita (since the start of the pandemic), having passed South Dakota. (2386 deaths/per capita).

Just two months ago, they were #28.

New record of 2,468 deaths reported in the week. (353/day average)

Even not counting the deaths they added yesterday, based on the deaths since June 1st, just before this latest wave, Florida is # 1 both in raw number of deaths and deaths per capita (although LA is pretty bad right now as well)."

A head-to-head study of all three authorized coronavirus vaccines in the United States finds the Moderna vaccine is slightly more effective than Pfizer's in real-life use in keeping people out of the hospital, and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen vaccine comes in third, but still providing 71% protection.

Pfizer's vaccine provided 88% protection against hospitalization, and Moderna's was 93% effective.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention led a nationwide study of vaccination involving more than 3,600 adults hospitalized for Covid-19 between March and August.

They found that the biggest difference between the vaccine made by Moderna and Pfizer/BioNtech's vaccine was driven by a decline that started about four months after people were fully vaccinated with Pfizer's vaccine.

"Differences in vaccine effectiveness between the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine might be due to higher mRNA content in the Moderna vaccine, differences in timing between doses (3 weeks for Pfizer-BioNTech versus 4 weeks for Moderna), or possible differences between groups that received each vaccine that were not accounted for in the analysis," the team wrote.

Data collected from 18 states between March and August suggest the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine reduces the risk of being hospitalized with COVID-19 by 91% in the first four months after receiving the second dose. Beyond 120 days, however, that vaccine efficacy drops to 77% (irrespective of age).

Meanwhile, Moderna's vaccine was 93% effective at reducing the short-term risk of COVID-19 hospitalization and remained 92% effective after 120 days.

After a winter at home, more Canadian snowbirds plan to come back to Florida

https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/...er/8377996002/

Instead of spending last winter sunning at Siesta Beach or sipping a drink at a downtown rooftop bar, many Canadian snowbirds stayed home, waiting out the pandemic.

But after a year of hibernation, more snowbirds are planning to return to Florida in 2021 — it's a just a matter of figuring out the best way to get here.

As snowbird season approaches once again, the U.S./Canada border remains closed to non-essential travel. But Canadians are coming anyway. Many say they will fly down if they can't drive their car across the border, and several plan to have their cars shipped from Canada for the season.

"Those who can afford to fly and have their vehicle cross the border, that's a considerable cost, $2,000 to $2,500 to have that happen," Weylie said. "People who just can't afford that, that's going to deter them from coming."

Wallace Weylie, legal counsel for the Canadian Snowbird Association, said there seems to be a lot of pent-up demand from regular snowbirds to return to a warmer climate.

The first year of COVID-19 saw a lot of Canadian snowbirds deciding to stay home, Stephen Fine, president and managing editor of Snowbird Advisor, an online publication for Canadian snowbirds, said. A survey conducted by Snowbird Advisor last year found that only about 30% of snowbirds returned to their usual sunny destinations for the 2021 season.

This year, things look more positive, Fine said. But sentiments have dipped a little bit since the delta variant started a new COVID wave.

"We did survey in the summer before cases went up, and at that point, the expectation was over 90% of snowbirds would return," Fine said. "We don't think at this point we’re going to hit 90-plus, that would be almost pre-pandemic levels. So it'll probably be somewhere between last year and that — probably 50-60%."

Florida’s COVID-19 hospitalizations plunge to under 9,000; ICU patients now under 2,300

https://www.bradenton.com/news/coron...254366123.html

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Sunday report showed 8,976 COVID-19 patients reported from 255 Florida hospitals.

That’s 417 fewer patients than Saturday’s report from 257 hospitals. In Sunday’s report, COVID-19 patients occupied 15.90% of inpatient beds in those hospital, compared with 16.11% in the previous day’s reporting hospitals.

Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 2,284 people were in intensive-care units, a decrease of 97 from the previous day’s report. That represents 36.28% of the ICU beds at the 255 hospitals reporting data, compared to 36.57 the previous day and 37.71% on Friday.

Any studies on using both Pfizer and Moderna vaxes?

We had Pfizer vax and no side effects except some simple arm soreness and tiredness second shot, but the long term efficacy does seem to wear down after 4 months.

Would we need a double dose of Moderna to keep the longer duration prevention or would 1 shot be enough since we already had a double dose…
They weren’t giving out Moderna when we were vaxxed in March/April in Tx

U.S. travel restrictions at Canadian border extended another month
https://www.detroitnews.com/story/ne...21/8419679002/

It looks like a lot of Canadians will not be coming back to Florida this season, because the land border remains closed to tourists from Canada. The reasoning behind the land border closure is difficult to understand, since Canada is doing much better than the US in controlling COVID, with about one third the per capita death rate as compared to the US. Also, vaccination rates are higher in Canada.
